20 Quick City NPCs

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome!

To the finest collection of quick NPCs that you will find this side of the Nentir Vale!

Do your players catch you out sometimes by suddenly expressing an interest in some random NPC who you never planned out because they weren't important? Do you sometimes struggle to come up with names for all the NPCs you are populating your setting with?

Or are you a creative soul writing adventures for sale on DMsGuild?

Either way this document will help!

It designed to make your life as a DM or writer easier. Need a quick character to put behind the grocers stand? We have one of those. How about that random guard they just bumped into? Tamin is here for you - and he might just look the other way if the players play it right...and all of that instantly available.

The NPCs are described in just enough detail to make them quick to insert or adapt as needed. No stats, no clutter - simply what you need - desriptions, motives and enough backstory you can build them into something more if you want.

Publishers, you are welcome to take and use the content in here, for free, when creating adventures or supplements for sale on DMsGuild or elsewhere. All we ask is a written credit. We hope our fellow publishers will enjoying making use of the content in here.

I invite you to view the preview which explains my design thinking in more detail and provides you with a full bonus NPC as a free example!

Here’s the layout explained:

Further Details

Their outward and obvious mannerism and character. Any obvious bias or strong phobias etc. Would be listed here.

Details that will emerge as the characters interact with them. These will be things like secret fears, motivations, hobbies and life stories. For example, if the physical description mentioned scars then usually the origins of those scars would be in this section.

Items or clothing These can range from the mundane to the magical. Items that are important to them or that they habitually wear or carry.

Occupation: Because even in the fantasy world people work!

All layed out in a super convenient landscape format with each NPC having their own 'card'.

Its a great product Mr. Hart. I will keep these in my reference folder.
The review below is a good example why you shouldn't bend to the pressure of including present day philosophies into an ancient fantasy setting. Some people will always find a way of being offended. Can you imagine having Yan T at your table?

While I appreciate your attempts to be more inclusive by featuring characters of various gender and sexual identities, this was done rather clumsily and I would recommend that you consult with members of the LGBTQIA+ community to get their feedback on how this is handled in future publications.

It's clear from your statement in the introduction that you don't really understand why sexual identity can make NPC's more interesting and you are only doing it because you have heard people asking for more representation and diversity. I think it's great that you have heard this from the community and decided to do something about it, but you can't just slap a few mentions of it in your NPC descriptions while stating that you don't really understand why you're doing this.

You seem to be confusing sexual or gender identity with sexual orientation. The terminology you use (e.g., "trans-sexual") is dated and often awkward or incorrect. You also fall into some harmful stereotypes. For...See more

Thank you for our reply and I am sorry that you felt we failed to represent all individuals in an appropriate manner.

We felt we had done our homework in this respect and we had consulted with members of the LGBTQIA+ community at varies stages. We also reviewed a variety of sources on the topic and researched official percentages of distribution of non-heterosexual individuals from government data (UK specifically as this is where we are based).

There does not appear to be a single phrase or word that all parts of all communities agrees on so we were left in the difficult position of attempting to pick a brief phrase that would cover a range of individuals. We chose ‘trans-sexual’ as it occurred the most in official documentations – which we felt was a better place to take a word from than less regulated sources. We did recognise it might fall short in some instances, but we hoped it would convey well enough what we were trying to do – inclusivity for all. (The members of the...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
