The Major's Guide to Alignment

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Alignment has been an essential part of the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Roleplaying Game from its earliest days.  Alignment has helped define many D&D heroes and villains while also providing a framework within which whole cosmologies have emerged.  This work is useful for all who enjoy D&D but is targeted at the more mature/educated player.  It provides both the Dungeon Master and players the option to use a more robust and well defined Alignment framework in their fifth edition games and campaigns and explains why Alignment is crucial to the game of D&D.

As noted in this guide, alignment plays a less overt, but not less important, role in the average 5th ed. D&D characters’ gameplay than in characters of previous editions. Particularly for players who first discovered D&D through 5th ed, the subtleties of alignment can remain elusive if not downright opaque.

Thankfully for them, this guide shines a light on even the most confusing aspects of alignment. It serves as a roadmap for developing and playing a D&D character of any alignment. Besides defining the terms and offering character building ideas, this guide includes example vignettes featuring a band of adventurers with different alignments facing down some pesky gnolls; these examples make the points crystal clear even for the folks up in the cheap seats.

Beyond just the self-explanatory (is my character Good or Evil?), The Major will walk you through each specific alignment available in D&D and the potential it offers your character to progress throughout your campaign....See more

If you're looking for a deeper delve into the nature of player character alignments in D&D, this PDF delivers a treasure trove of useful analysis on a sometimes thorny topic.

The Major's Guide to Alignment offers a complementary discussion of the alignments. It explores the ontological nature of alignment in a very accessible and engaging manner. Each of the primary player alignments receives a thorough explanation, followed by a vignette presenting a problem facing the character, and how he or she would reason out a course of action to tackle the problem.

The genius comes with the idea of the common thread of a gnoll incursion that runs through each alignment's section. This clear, accessible example helps the reader understand how a character of certain alignment might reason his or her way into acting against the gnolls.

The final section includes a great section on evil alignments for the DM's use. It helps clarify the differences between the evil alignments, and...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
