The Elemental Spellbook: 80 Spells of Ice, Fire, and Lightning

Welcome to the Elemental Spellbook, a compendium of 80 (yes, 80!) original ice, fire, and lightning spells across every spell level!

This compendium contains enough spells that (when combined with the PHB) you can create a spellcaster focused on a single element and never have to learn an off-theme spell for your entire 20-level career.

And these aren't just blasting spells: you can preserve yourself in cryostasis, spy through fireplaces, short-circuit other spells with an EMP blast, and much, much more!

The Elemental Spellbook is for you if:

  • You've ever wanted to play a caster devoted to a single element
  • You're a DM who'd like to include more elemental magic in your adventures
  • You want to see elemental magic do more than just deal typed damage
  • You just plain old want more options for your spellcasting

As with all of my content, this is a living document. I will take feedback to heart, and any future revisions will be freely available to anyone who has already purchased this spellbook.

Happy spell-slinging!

This book is very well done! I am curious though; will you be doing other elemental spells, like thunder, poison, or acid?

Thank you! I do hope to do another book with other themes in the future!

I just wanted to say that I too look forward to additional elemental spells! Love the diversity you can create with these in a campaign!

I have 1 small gripe about this Spell list and many others I have encountered here on DMsGuild.
The spells are listed in alphabetical order usually. not by spell level then alphabetical.

This one in particular is Spell type (Cold, Fire, etc..) then alphabetical. I dont know why this is done, ever. If i want to look though cantrips i have to scroll all over this pdf or use the find feature in my pdf reader to look for the word Cantrip. Is there a particular reason its not listed by Spell lvls then alphabetical? Its maddening to search through the way most authors on here do this.

To be fair, I love the content. I HATE the way its laid out.

I can't speak to other DMs Guild spell supplements, but the organization that you're asking for (spell level, then alpha) is exactly what I used for the spell list at the beginning of the document, in keeping with the standard set by WotC in the Player's Handbook. Did you perhaps overlook that list?

As for the full spell descriptions, going alphabetically without regard to spell levels is also the standard set by WotC in the Player's Handbook. My only deviation there is the elemental grouping, meant to be helpful for those creating "themed" spellcasters. However, you're correct that it's an extra step for those making non-themed casters. Thanks for the heads-up! I'll keep it in mind when laying out future products.

Also, glad you love the content!

Love the content of this book, glad to see more magic options for specific elements.
I have a question, Decimation Bolts state that you can fire 10 bolts but is there any restriction on firing on the same line 2-10 times?

Glad you like it!
As for your question, there's no explicit restriction on giving all ten bolts the same area, but there's room for interpretation on what doing so would accomplish (both technically and practically). Technically speaking, the damage doesn't say "per bolt" and so either you're in the area or not and the damage is either 20d6 or nothing. Practically speaking, even if you stacked the damage it's probably not worth it to lose out on all that AoE coverage. It's a heavily-resisted damage type, and even without resistance it's still not going to kill the tier of monsters you'd want to burn a 9th-level slot against (and just bounces off the Terrasque). If you have 9th-level spells and that narrow of a target area, you're better off casting Wish or something. Save Decimation Bolts for when you need a mix of damage and disruption in multiple directions at once. At least, that's my advice. :)

Is there a list of which classes use which spells? Or is it pretty much any spellcaster can use them?

I intentionally left that out. My philosophy is that whether the spell is a good or bad fit for the individual character is more important than whether or not I included it on a class's list. For example, even though I mostly had sorcerers in mind during design, I've heard of lots of folks tricking out their clerics of Thor with some of these lightning spells, even though I might not have pictured them as cleric spells. And isn't that the important part? :)

Any chance that we'll see other elements like earth or air?

What about elements like wood and metal for wu jen characters?

I hope to do a book for other elements in the future!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
