**AUTHOR'S NOTE: Because Wizards of the Coast exploits and dismisses marginalized creators while promoting and sheltering mediocre and/or harmful white men, I have changed the price of this product to FREE so that they won't get money for it. You can keep up with my latest creations at PurpleAether.itch.io instead.**

Welcome to the Elemental Spellbook, a compendium of 80 (yes, 80!) original ice, fire, and lightning spells across every spell level!

This compendium contains enough spells that (when combined with the PHB) you can create a spellcaster focused on a single element and never have to learn an off-theme spell for your entire 20-level career.

And these aren't just blasting spells: you can preserve yourself in cryostasis, spy through fireplaces, short-circuit other spells with an EMP blast, and much, much more!

The Elemental Spellbook is for you if:

  • You've ever wanted to play a caster devoted to a single element
  • You're a DM who'd like to include more elemental magic in your adventures
  • You want to see elemental magic do more than just deal typed damage
  • You just plain old want more options for your spellcasting

As with all of my content, this is a living document. I will take feedback to heart, and any future revisions will be freely available to anyone who has already purchased this spellbook.

Happy spell-slinging!

Hey man, I downloaded your spell and I absolutely love them. So, I have a question to ask, I am currently writing a fantasy book where I'm using D&D character mechanics and spells as baselines for the characters and their abilities. Can I use your elemental spells where I credit you as the creator of some of the spells or would you rather something more concrete?

Glad you like them! Unfortunately, Wizards of the Coast seizes ownership rights of everything that's published on the DMs Guild. You'd have to take it up with them. (Good luck?)

On the Balancing Front:
The Corona Spell (LvL1) is quite OP. It basically blocks your concentration, but in turn tunes all fire spells 2 or more levels up if they are used within 30ft. Taking Scorching Ray as an example: it has 3 projectiles with 2d6 fire damage each. The Corona spell makes that 4d6 against enemies in 30ft range. That means, against single target, you can deal 12d6 damage with a level 1+2 spell, or 24d6 damage with LVL1+2+2 spells.
The fact that the spell itself is just a bonus action means it also allows a fire bolt in the first round, meaning we are up to 1D10+26D6 in 3 turns. For a level 3 Wizard. Take a Sorcerer with quickened spell and you can even throw in extra casts of fire bolt for even crazier damage.

A Level 3 sorcerer that has converted one of his LvL1 spells to a sorcery point can deal 3d10+30d6 fire damage with two quickened spells. That is 121.5 damage on average. Of course he needs to make 6 spell attacks for the scorching rays and 3 for the fire bolts,...See more

Meanwhile, Fireball all by itself can deal 1,232 damage on average—if there's a medium creature in every space in the entire radius and they all fail their saves.
Crafting a Magical Christmas Land scenario doesn't prove the spell is broken, it proves your criticism isn't grounded in actual play. Nobody's reported actual issues with any spell in this book.

sorry but its a bit shitty that i paid for this product and suddenly it is free and also doesn't seem to get any revisions.
I pay for products because i also expect them to be improved upon, which free products don't really need to do, given that they are free. So making something that was quite pricey suddenly free is quite dickish, why did i have to pay for something others get for free now in the same version?

Please understand that I did not make the pricing decision lightly. Making it free has cost me hundreds of dollars in sales; sorry about your eight.
As for updates, rest assured, I value my craft and will make revisions as necessary, just as soon as there's any meaningful number of revisions that need making.

Your comments are offensive, stereotypes white men and are an example of “acceptable racism”. All racist comments are wrong regardless of the speaker’s race. My children do not need to be told by you that being white is wrong. Shame on you!

I'm afraid I don't know what the issue might be. On my end, nothing has changed since hundreds of sales ago, so I recommend contacting the DMs Guild support team. There should be relevant links on the bottom-left of most pages on the site. Good luck!

Hey man, love the book spells are really interesting and far more balanced than most homebrew. Just got a question, could you clarify how you intended the cantrip Frost Trap to work?
Do you take the damage from the strike? Or is the intention to stop multi attacking creatures continuing its attacks?

Ah, good old Frost Trap... this is one of those spells that you're supposed to use creatively. No, it doesn't stop any damage, it just temporarily attaches the offending weapon or limb to your body. The most obvious application is, as you suspected, to interrupt a single-weapon multiattack. But depending on the situation, you might be able to run away with somebody's weapon, keep a flying creature grounded for a turn, catch yourself before being swallowed whole, or whatever else makes sense at the time. Good luck!

Awesome, thank you!

And regarding your beloved shadow spells, yes, I do plan on making some "sequels" to cover other magical themes in the future, and shadow is definitely on my radar!

I have 1 small gripe about this Spell list and many others I have encountered here on DMsGuild.
The spells are listed in alphabetical order usually. not by spell level then alphabetical.

This one in particular is Spell type (Cold, Fire, etc..) then alphabetical. I dont know why this is done, ever. If i want to look though cantrips i have to scroll all over this pdf or use the find feature in my pdf reader to look for the word Cantrip. Is there a particular reason its not listed by Spell lvls then alphabetical? Its maddening to search through the way most authors on here do this.

To be fair, I love the content. I HATE the way its laid out.

Hello!
I can't speak to other DMs Guild spell supplements, but the organization that you're asking for (spell level, then alpha) is exactly what I used for the spell list at the beginning of the document, in keeping with the standard set by WotC in the Player's Handbook. Did you perhaps overlook that list?

As for the full spell descriptions, going alphabetically without regard to spell levels is also the standard set by WotC in the Player's Handbook. My only deviation there is the elemental grouping, meant to be helpful for those creating "themed" spellcasters. However, you're correct that it's an extra step for those making non-themed casters. Thanks for the heads-up! I'll keep it in mind when laying out future products.

Also, glad you love the content!

Love the content of this book, glad to see more magic options for specific elements.
I have a question, Decimation Bolts state that you can fire 10 bolts but is there any restriction on firing on the same line 2-10 times?

Glad you like it!
As for your question, there's no explicit restriction on giving all ten bolts the same area, but there's room for interpretation on what doing so would accomplish (both technically and practically). Technically speaking, the damage doesn't say "per bolt" and so either you're in the area or not and the damage is either 20d6 or nothing. Practically speaking, even if you stacked the damage it's probably not worth it to lose out on all that AoE coverage. It's a heavily-resisted damage type, and even without resistance it's still not going to kill the tier of monsters you'd want to burn a 9th-level slot against (and just bounces off the Terrasque). If you have 9th-level spells and that narrow of a target area, you're better off casting Wish or something. Save Decimation Bolts for when you need a mix of damage and disruption in multiple directions at once. At least, that's my advice. :)

Is there a list of which classes use which spells? Or is it pretty much any spellcaster can use them?
Customer avatar
Jacob K October 17, 2019 1:33 am UTC
CREATOR
I intentionally left that out. My philosophy is that whether the spell is a good or bad fit for the individual character is more important than whether or not I included it on a class's list. For example, even though I mostly had sorcerers in mind during design, I've heard of lots of folks tricking out their clerics of Thor with some of these lightning spells, even though I might not have pictured them as cleric spells. And isn't that the important part? :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
