The Thing In The Basement

The Thing In The Basement

"Danger is closer to home than you think."

The Thing In The Basement is a 3-4 hour mystery adventure for Level 1 -2 characters. Perfect for introducing a new batch of heroes to your table, or new players to the world of D&D! This adventure is very role-play heavy with a smattering of combat.

The kitchen help working for The Deaf Hound tavern and inn has gone missing, and the citizens of the town of Matlock suspect the ex-con owner of the establishment in foul play. He begs you for help before they string him up from the gallows! Can your group solve the mystery in time?

Included is the city of Matlock and several merchant-type NPCs that your players can befriend and come back to time and time again. Maybe even establish a base of operations there.

I ran this as a 1-1 game with my girlfriend who started at level 3. Her set up is that she has set up shop as the local magic provider on the outskirts of town. She lives with her landlord, a dwarf plumber/handyman, who occasionally helps her in her work. Between the two of them they already knew many of the npcs. It also gave her an easy way to get involved with the story.

It worked really well as a one on one game. It was mostly conversations with the local townspeople and she enlisted Grimsly to help with some of the more dangerous parts. I couldn't help but futs with it, so I added some more characters (Wally's friends) and kind of didn't set up some of them so she took the bait to visit them.

I also added some more stuff to about Thormond (who I made worse) and nestled it into my world that I use in other games too, but it was relatively easy to do that, which I appreciated!

You are so welcome! I am so glad you adopted the NPCs and made them your own. I had a lot of fun building them and fleshing them out.

I had to switch to a oneshot at the last minute today, so I went with this. The party loved it, and the fighter had a barechested fist fight with the mariff (mayor-sheriff). Thank you for the good times.

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
