Beyond the Basics is a companion book to the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Rules created by Wizards of the Coast and includes 76 encounters featuring some of D&D's most recognizable and beloved creatures across 237 pages.

With encounters ranging from wrangling suits of animated armor sent out into the city to shout one-star reviews of a smithy that angered a petty enchantress, to rallying a community of dwarf artisans against a tyrannical adult red dragon, Beyond the Basics is a great introduction for new Dungeon Masters, as well as a breath of fresh air for more established players.

We hope that you enjoy this vivacious collection of exciting encounters that are sure to inspire your imagination and lead your players on some of their most memorable and hilarious adventures yet!

I honestly can't wait to whip some of these out on my players in our new campaign. I've been using monsters in a very standard way and thanks to Beyond the Basics not only do I have encounters for when I don't have the time or energy to make my own, I [...]

This is a wonderful resource for DMs who might need a little nudge of inspiration in designing dynamic and engaging encounters with a boatload of the iconic monsters of D&D. A ton of great authors collaborated for this project, and the variety pres [...]

One of the most useful kinds of content for me as a DM is something that is more than a random encounter (like 2d6 goblins or whatever) but less than a full adventure, something I can quickly insert into a session over anything from 30 minutes to two [...]

An excellent collection of encounters centrered around each of the creatured found in the D&D Basic rules, with a description of the scenario and a level suitability guide. Most have the option to resolve as either a social or combat event, so work [...]

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
