This is a Half Dragon player race that I made for a friend, and decided to upload here after numerous encouragements. it is a variation of the Dragonborn, and made to be more up to par with the other races, while making them feel unique in their own way. This PDF will give you the Half Dragon player race, its numerous subraces, their racial feats, as well as a possible epic boon. While featuring art by the talented Barelynormalactivity, whom I commissioned for this work.

Here is a link to my Revised Dragonborn player race that is meant to be used in combination with my Half Dragon player race: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/310546/Dragonborn-revised?view_as_pub=1

I added this so that Dragonborn players would not feel left behind when compared to the Half Dragon and the other races.

I hope you will enjoy how it turned out, and that you will have fun using it in your adventures!

What are your thoughts on spells of certain elements getting a slight damage increase if they align with the corresponding dragon? For example, would a half-dragon of fire descent get bonus damage on fire spells and bronze heritage getting a boost to lightning abilities?

Well I have considered that, but instead I decided to to make the Draconic Bloodline more interesting with my revised Draconic Bloodline, which I am working now as we speak: https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-LzTChw6zipvdm0OZHqv

Adding additional boons to the Half Dragon would go at the expense of their balanced state, even if your idea is a thematic one. Therefor I made it so that a Red Half Dragon could take the Red Dragon as its ancestor, for thematic purposes, and still benefit from the resistance.

I also added the additional option to build into strength with that build, so that the point in strength that Half Dragons gain would not be wasted.

Fair enough. Now, have you considered expanding on potential racial/stat benefits when it comes to the non-draconic parent? There's full coverage for whatever dragon heritage the player decides but would there be any potential variation if their other half is human, elf, goblin, orc, tiefling, etc? Or does that venture too deep into making the race too overpowered?

I actually tried that, but unfortunately it did not work out for the purpose of balance.

In addition, the half dragon is not necessarily only for the half human half dragon variant, which is why they gain none of the human traits that the humans get. Essentially, the dragon's blood is more dominant compared to the mortal partner, and even a small sized race like a goblin would be born bigger due to the draconic blood, so he would end up being medium sized.

I figured that was more or less the case. How about the consideration of the tail being used as a weapon like a Minotaur's horns or the upcoming Leonin's claws?

Well I wanted to give the more bestial traits to the dragonborn, whom I also made a revision for. I think you will like the Murkdweller, who are the only dragonborn subrace who have a tail, but are very well able to use it: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/310546/Dragonborn-Revised?src=by_author_of_product

Will have to give it a look sometime. Also wouldn't mind doing some collab work with you if you ever felt the itch to work on other dragon themed material or branch out into other races/beings, etc.

Sure, I would be open for that. Just send me a private message here and we can discuss the details.

My group are loving finally having access to a half dragon race, but as DM I’m little confused by the dragon form feat and was wondering if you could clarify it for me please.

The feat stats that if the half dragon already had tail, claw or wing attacks it retains them. But I have not found anything within the half dragon racials that would give them access to these features. Was there another supplement for the half dragon that I am missing? As I’m unsure that attacks a half dragon in dragon form actually gains.

Hello Sean,

Sorry for the late reply, but I would be more than happy to help! The description is added in the case that he attains access to those natural attacks through other means. I'm currently working on a final project, in which I have added a "Path of the Chromatic Dragon" subclass for the barbarian, where he gains access to these natural weapons. Because the Half Dragon player race will also be added to this final project, I wanted to make sure that it was mechanically sound and felt thematic. Here is a link to all the mechanically finished content:

I'm just waiting for the artist to finish the artworks for them now, but you are free to use any of them as you see fit in advance!

Hello Niels,

Thank you for your reply. I'll be sure to take a look my group is loving both the Half Dragon and the Dragonborn you've done. :)

Just a quick additional. The Improved Dragonborn v4 has what appears to be a paragraph for natural weapons semi-off page next to the alignment. Is that a second that you chose to remove or should it be included on the document?

Hello Sean B,

Again, I'm happy to hear that you and your group are liking both my homebrew. I hope you will have fun with them, and that you will like the final products as well!

As for the GMbinder file, are you looking at it through your phone? Gmbinder works well for me most of the time to edit my content, but it has the bad habit of putting paragraphs outside the screen if you look at the file on your phone. Could you look at it behind a PC and tell me if it works for you correctly then?

Hello Sean,

That is odd, because it shows fine to me, and you are the first one to tell me there is a problem with it. How is this instead?

Hello Niels,

That link displays perfectly, thank you. I've attached a link to what I was seeing. It could well be just an issue at me end, but I thought you should know.

Hello Sean,

What you showed me is exactly what viewers see on their phone, but this is the first time this has happened on a PC. I think it is an issue at your end, but thank you regardless for bringing it to my attention.

And I'm glad to hear that it is working for you. Again, I hope you and your group will have fun with them! As well as the other homebrew content I linked to you previously.

Is this any different from the version that was posted up on reddit?

Yes, this is an updated version. All the other versions were drafts. I completed this after all the great feedback I had received, and changed some of the subraces their traits, as well as the racial feats. I also added a minor sub-class, and a link to an updated homebrew Dragonborn player race. So that Dragonborn players would not feel left behind. I also edited the text, so that it would be properly worded. And added the HD art to it. I hope you will like it!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
