ADD TO WISHLIST >

Bodies continue pile up, and the Flaming Fist still has nothing but a name. Thankfully, the perpetrator of the murders has slipped up and the Flaming Fist has captured one of their underlings, in turn, has revealed the presence of a cult hideout in the sewers beneath the city. The Flaming Fist has asked that you investigate. Are you up for the task?

Part Two of the Betrayal is in the Blood series of adventures.

A Two-to-Four-Hour Adventure for 1st through 4th Level Characters (APL 3).

Purchased by my FLGS to be run for Adventurer's League, and was a lot of fun to run. My table really enjoyed the mini dungeon crawl and very quickly became engrossed in the plot. I had each person at the table roll a complication for Bonus 1 (was a table of three, so it didn't make it run long), and that was good for timing and player interactions.

I suggest to increase the difficulty of the Final Encounter if you are running this with a strong party of players. The Encounter scaling is bad. 9 Cultists and 2 Spined Devils is nothing to a couple of lvl 3s or 4s. I opted to add a Berserker and 2 Cultist Fanatics from the previous Module to protect the ritual. Having them stand off to the side in robes and only reveal themselves once engaged made my players go wild and ended up being a very intense fight.

Similar to Mike M, the Bonus Objective 1 is similarly confusing. The entire objective comes down to "Party must overcome 1 to 5 complications, depending on APL/Size". But the mod doesn't say out of how many? For an average party, do I just roll 3 complications? And is it a group check, because it doesn't say the checks are group checks, and if they aren't then does a single failure amongst the entire party on any of the 3 complications mean they have 'failed'? More to the point, how many complications TOTAL do I roll? All 6? Is a roll of 7-10 considered 'overcoming' a complication? If not, why include a 50% chance of just, having to reroll the die to get a complication when you can just make it a 1-6 table?

I'm going to run this next week, so I'm going to assume the checks are all group checks, and that the group has to do all 6 complications, just in a random order, and the amount passed by group check will determine whether they pass or fail the tail.

So .... spoiler alert here, but the summoning ritual in Bonus Objective B was a bit confusing. The party I am running through it is considered STRONG so the language is: Add two cultists; the cultists don’t flee. Only four cultists need survive to complete the ritual. It is this last piece that is the source of confusion. I've read and reread and see no restriction on the ritual from the number of cultists REMAINING, just that one of them has to basically die every turn to avoid the ritual from happening. This then, in turn, reads to me that the STRONG change actually makes it easier because the ritual (by implication) fails if only three cultists remain alive, right?

Will the FG mod that is on the FG store be added to the package here, or do we have to buy separately?

Writing this on the Discussions page because it’s a spoiler. Who was actually summoned by Korek Sand’s spell? Was it Gharizol, or the other Spined Devil? I don’t think my players will be happy until they have clear evidence that the summoned devil did the deed. Not sure it’s mentioned in the adventure?

There are two typos in the text of the inscription at the threshold in the player handout. They spell out "te" and "teir" instead of "the" and "their".

Page 3 Flame Daryn Falburn to pcs “ Two jobs for you lot. Follow Manip Benn Hithlin. Don’t get spotted. Hithlin maybe disloyal and passing information to the cult of Zariel. Don’t rumble with his buddies. They are other Flame members but wear a black handkerchief as symbol of loyalty to Hithlin. Next go to the house of Sands Korek in Bloomridge district of the Lower City. Initial investigations revealed no signs of entry or exit by whoever perpetrated the killing. Wait for Manip Tradran Foremantle”.
Page 4 Foremantle to fists at front door. “ You two are relieved. I don’t care if you are in Hithlin’s hip pocket. I out rank you. These new fists and I will check out the murder scene. Take the bozo at the back door with you. Black handkerchiefs as secret symbol. Oh please. Now move out.”

Overall, it was good. But it took quite a bit of prep that could have been avoided by a better layout.

1. Number the rooms and corresponded to the text.

2. Many of the Perception checks should be Investigation checks.

3. In the house, combine the description of the rooms and the clues in the room together.

4. Make the hell hound/imp battle a little harder somehow. I had 7 players with an APL of 2 (I had a few level 3 players) and they wiped the floor with them. I know, I could have added some cultists or another hell hound, but it was getting late.

For #4, the hellhound has a breath attack for 6d6 that he could probably catch several of the pcs in .... did they just make all their saves or did they maybe down it before it had a chance?

The results of passing the mansion room perception checks (why not investigation?) being on a different page/section made it harder to find the results and was frustrating.

Bonus Objective B's first paragraph says, "After completing Part 2, characters playing this bonus objective [...]" The next paragraph ends with, "The characters can only pursue this bonus objective before beginning Part 2."
That's conflicting information there.

The first map has numbers for the rooms, but the text doesn't use the numbers so you have to figure out what room is what on your own. The second map doesn't even have numbers for the rooms, so it is the same situation. It isn't hard to figure out what is what, but this was obviously an oversight in design.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
