It’s been a long, arduous trip, but you’re finally here—Baldur’s Gate. You’re not out of peril yet, however, even if you’re leaving the lawless wilds behind you, the streets of the Gate still run red with blood. But you quickly find that arriving at the city wasn’t the biggest challenge at all, now you must convince the city’s rulers to grant asylum to you and those in your charge.

Part One of the Betrayal is in the Blood series of adventures.

A Two-to-Four-Hour Adventure for 1st through 4th Level Characters (APL 3).

I enjoyed playing this adventure today with some good friends. I think the strong point about this adventure is the continuity from 01 - there is a lot of story linkage from the previous adventure, and I think players will enjoy it more if they have played that adventure. The plot emphasises the setting quite nicely.

Thanks for dropping by to leave a comment! Introducing several elements of the setting was definitely one of the goals, happy you enjoyed it.

Harwin's connection to the murder is quite weak, I feel. The only thing seemingly connecting Harwin is that dress that players are suppose to be suspicious about. I would rather have a more substantial clue that the murdered was some sort of craftsman.

Hi and thanks for the feedback.

While it's not intended that adventurers have any certainty about the murderer until they investigate his workshop and find the clear evidence there, if you want to add this type of clue to the murder scene, be aware that it may result in the party skipping the victim's residence and meeting the characters present there. This can lead to them missing not only the adventure's magic item, but also the majority of the clues to the real mystery of what's happening in BG. The group may also lack the impetus to force themselves into the back rooms of every innocent merchant and not find the real evidence. All that being said, it's certainly possible to go this way, just be prepared to make a lot adjustments and make up extra locations and NPCs on the fly.

In my own experience, every group i've run it for so far has either noticed the dress OR asked about wife's alibi. If a group fails to do at least one of those, my recommendation is to provide a clue to ask...See more

Hit the wrong button but I will not let me review. First module I quit in disgust. Important information is buried in the wall of text. Some already mention the problem with Harwin. This is a blue's clues level mystery. To improve it. Page 30 add Vollis Foote description. Page 5 highlight, "a letter address to Segren" . Page 7 add investigation check of Markus profession. Add mention of "possibility large needle". B. All about the hallgates mention Harwin store is 2 stores down. In right hand column give the names of two dead victims. (I had all the victims in a weekly poker game.) Page 8 D. Harwin Shop highlight Apprentice zook. This so people know Zook is in the shop.
Page 9 Looks like "Gharizol" is going to be important. Break the paragraph What they to what. So we know this is important. In fact I would go back and say each body had a bloody "G" on their forehead.

Sorry you had a bad experience and couldn't finish the adventure. Thank you for taking the time to provide some feedback, it's definitely a good tip for DMs to highlight some of the key clues and NPCs in the adventure during prep.

It shouldn't be necessary if the adventure presented the information in a rational way (say a DMs summary at the start that lists the clues in a series of bullet points. The mandated structure of Season 8/9 adventure is increasingly becoming a problem.

While overall I found the series well balanced in the world of problem solving, intrigue, and combat, this one I felt was oddly lacking. I found it be rather dry if you're looking for interesting combat encounters. Literally you can go through the entire encounter and do nothing but play "whodunit". I would of added at the very least another skirmish or something funny like a succubis applying for citizenship

Agreed. Not to mention, if you're playing the mod hot off of 09-01, (spoilers for both mods) the murder mystery is less engaging here than in the prequel. There are very few suspects, which the module almost immediately railroads down to only 1.

Thanks for the comments! It's absolutely intended to be a social-focused adventure that can be done with little to no combat.

If you have a particularly strong group and are looking to increase the combat difficulty in Bonus Objective A, I recommend looking in the MTF section on the specific cult for the sort of enemies that could be used to beef it up.

If Harwin left his shop a couple of days ago, then why is he still in town when the party checks out his shop?

Hi, this is an error an in the wording of the text here and a correction has been sent to the editors.

The correct sequence of events is: two days ago, Harwin suddenly decided that he needed to go see the shearing operations. He wasn't scheduled to leave until today.

In DDAL09-01 she is described as a "young woman" in the Dramatis Personae section.

"A young girl of 10" is the correct description of Dara. The error may be in 9-1 if she's described as something else.

The error is in 01. In 02,04,05,06 she is described as a 10 yr old girl. I had the same initial confusion as I was scheduled to run all 7 mods at GHC. Since I ran it there I received the copy free so I cannot leave a review. I do have to say with the right group and the ability to RP the NPCs this was a very enjoyable mod. No combat as I ran it in a 2 hr slot, and everyone really enjoyed it.

I was also surprised by this change from 01.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
