The shield dwarves of western Faerûn sometimes speak of a labyrinthine structure on the shores of a misty lake. Rumored to imprison an ancient creature that predates Faerûn’s beginnings, the place has long been sealed. But now coins are showing up in bazaars and trader’s booths that match the description of those minted by this citadel, and they are rightly concerned.

A Six-to-Eight-Hour Adventure for Tier 4 Characters. Optimized for APL 18.

This adventure's code was originally DDAO-21 - part of the "Author Only" program. Due to its presence, I was able to attend dozens of gamedays, retail locations, and conventions across the United States. I ran over 100 tables of just this one adventure (never mind the dozens of other adventures for my regular local group and other adventures upon organizer request), and in the course of doing so met an unbelievable number of AWESOME players, DMs, and organizers.

Inside this download you can find not only an adventure that can be as fast as 4 hours or as long as 12 hours (the longest I ran it in one sitting!), but you will also see some custom art that was commissioned for this adventure, brand-new maps, and designer's notes on how to run this adventure. It even includes a player-appropriate appendix detailing the town of Almorel, in the Hordelands!

You can play each adventure independently. They are part of a larger story and can be played in any order, as they are not true "sequels" - instead, consider these as little views into the lost history of the Forgotten Realms.

Happy gaming, folks, and let those dice roll!

- Alan

PS: seriously, check out my artists. Great people and super excited to work on these kinds of projects :)

You can get the big map from the original artist's site
https://crossheadstudios.com/2018/08/25/dwarven-ruins/

(This is not stating the image was stolen, just for those that use VTT and want the map in a more usable format without the numbers listed.)

Crosshead Studios does great work, and they were gracious enough to allow me a limited license to use this map for the adventure. I very much support people backing their Patreon for the high quality maps and other products they design :)

Another note on the maps. The description for Part 2 A. Silent Watchers states, "Each of the 12 alcoves houses a single statue." But, the Silent Watchers map only has 9 alcoves. I understand that the hallway leading to it closes with a final alcove but that is still only 10 instead of 12.

Question on the maps. Scene D says "Worm Piles. Any area occupied by a worm pile is difficult terrain..." I don't see any worm piles on the map but I do see a giant gem with white/blue runes around it. There's also what looks like water in a moat-like area around the main section where the giant gem is. I assume the giant gem is the battery but are the white/blue runes to represent the worm piles? If so, it would be good to mention that in the room description.

This is the best adventure I have played in. This is what legendary Tier 4 content should be like.

My players ask about removing the death save penalty. I ruled since it Tier 4 it could not be removed.

The map art in this is amazing, but the image of the PDF in the mines is not high enough resolution to use on Virtual Tabletop programs without it being very pixelated. Since this is part of the Stay at Home, Play Games bundle, please PLEASE consider adding high resolution versions of your map files (especially the mines!).

Several times this adventure mentions a Part 3 but I cannot find it.

Could definitely use to elaboration because I’m having a hard time with a read through during my prep. Overall, seems like a blast even if a little disjointed.

Great adventure.
Need clarifications before running it my first time. Will try to be spoiler free.
In Pt2, ScA: is each choice given meant to be exclusively for individual PCs? If multiple individuals make the same choice, is the result experienced individually?
Pt2, ScB refers to a map. There's no map in v1.01, but detailed dimensions are given. Am I missing a map?

Hey hey!

part 2, scene A:
The characters can make one collective decision. What the group chooses is what happens - though only a single choice will be accepted.

part 2, scene B:
You're totally right, and I dunno why that wasn't there (or reported from others). I uploaded a new copy with some slight revisions, and included a map that supports it. Honestly, I have an actual map specifically for this scene but in retrospect it's a bit gruesome, so I used an alternative piece.

Thanks for the heads-up!

I just played this last night using a character with a relevant Story Award. Love the lore and the throwback to Windows to the Past.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
