"Are The Dark Archetypes balanced? I am happy to report that, yes, they are. Some are more powerful than others, but in specific situations. Different skills pay different bills. It's not about everyone being able to do everything great. It's about everyone being able to do something great."

Hey Authors! Looks like you mislabeled the v1.4 download on this page. It's labeled "(The Dark Archetypes)". Whereas v1.3 is labeled as v1.4 .... since neither document has the version mentioned inside the document. It's hard to tell which is which. Any help?

The correct version is the one titled "The Dark Archetypes" with the file name ending with 1.4
We removed the file of the previous version but DMs Guild takes a while to load these things.
If you want to make sure you have the correct version check the trait "Materialistic Entity" of the Paladin of Envy.
If it says that you get it at level 7 you have the correct version (the other version says level 10 because of a typo).

Thanks, Nikolas! Also, I love this book. My players especially love the spells and we've used about 15-18 of them so far to wonderful effect. They're unique, mechanically balanced and thematically flavorful.

Looking at the Dead Tongue feature for Path of the Deathsworn, I'm not seeing any limitations on how many times a day the spells can be cast. Was this supposed to follow the same pattern as the other features where spells cast are limited to your proficiency bonus?

For the Oni Monk, what is the purpose of splitting the Guandao into two weapons? It says that's how you're suppose to do major damage, but I don't see how that makes it do more damage than just attacking with one? I was also wondering if the Guandao was suppose to become a monk weapon at 3rd level (which would allow you to use dex for it) or is it suppose to remain strength based? Ascended Oni doesn't really seem to add any benefit, it really just makes you a bigger target for the most part, so I'd also like to know the purpose behind that.

Hey, thanks for your question.

The Guandao does NOT count as a Monk weapon until level 14. You are not splitting the Guandao into two weapons, you get to wield a "duplicated" version of your guandao with your other hand as well. So you wield two "two-handed" weapons as an Ascended Oni. While the 14th level does not add *too much* combat prowess, you unlock the Change Shape (which is a roleplaying ability), your size increases (which is mostly a thematic trait, but still has its uses) and you can wield two "two handed" weapons as an Ascended Oni which we believe coupled with Stinger Barrage can be devastating.

I hope this answers your questions :)

I'm still a touch confused on the purpose of doubling the guandao. Even holding two "two handed" weapons, as per the rules of D&D, you can only attack with one weapon as an action, and use your bonus action to attack with a second/offhand weapon once on each turn. You also need a feat to be able to do this if the weapon isn't a light weapon. Are you supposed to be able to attack with both weapons at once? While using stingers barrage, or am I still missing something? As it's written, Stinger barrage says you can make an attack for each ki point spent. Which, to my understanding, would mean you have to use your main hand weapon to make that attack, meaning the second guando isn't used.

Hello. The Dark Archetypes were conceived and published months before the new official class (the Artificer) was released. When the artificer was eventually published we felt that there should be a Dark Archetype for it so we made a new one from scratch, with a lot of options, new spells and original art. We have added a lot of free content to our Dark Archetypes after they were released but we felt that the Artificer had to be a standalone product. The Complete Dark Archetypes includes this book (The Dark Archetypes) + The Abomination Architect, an Artificer subclass.

There is currently no way to buy a printed version of this book unfortunately.

I think it's odd that clerics have a list of domain spells but the druid subclass does not. I like this, I just thought that was odd not to include.

Hey, thanks for your comment! All cleric domains have domain spells whereas not all druid circles have circle spells (take the Moon Druid for example). So a druidic circle does not *have* to include bonus spells. During development of the druid of the fungus we decided that we didn't want to focus on spells so we ditched the bonus spells. We are happy that you liked it, though :)

I have a question regarding the Oath of Lust Paladin's Last Kiss divinity. If used against a target under a Charm Person spell, and the target fails their save, would the damage cause Charm Person to end? Or would the target remain charmed as per the description of Last Kiss.

If a creature is charmed by the Paladin, then if they fail their save they are damaged and they remain charmed. If they succeed they suffer the same damage and are no longer charmed. If you attempt to use Last Kiss on a creature that is charmed but not charmed by you, you cannot use Last Kiss. I hope this answers your question :)

Hey Rob! Thanks for your input, at this point in time we feel that we do not have enough audience that is asking for an FG conversion. But this is not a standalone title. There are plans to extend The Dark Archetypes franchise (though not milk it out of its mind). We are familiar with your work on FG conversions. If we feel that the next titles (regardless if they are connected with TDA or not) need an FG conversion and we believe that your work reflects on the final result we strive for, we will contact you :)

Oh hey Nikolas, that's great. Whether you use me or not, I would LOVE to see these titles in FG. I'm not sure I understand the need for a fan base to scream for the FG version. I would assume EVERY PDF on the planet should need to be converted to FG, but I am PERHAPS biased. Ha!

Cool, but what is the difference between the Circle of Spores and the Circle of the Fungus?
Reply
Customer avatar

The Circle of the Fungus takes a more thematic approach and focuses on the control a fungus organism may have on another creature. I believe the Circle of Spores does not focus that much on manipulation. Plus the Circle of the Fungus introduces new mechanics that can be used on allies and enemies alike (the symbiotic spores). Hope I helped!

I'm curious what the Shadowborn rogue archetype is. Is it like the shadowdancer prestige class in D&D 3e and Pathfinder?

The Shadowborn can leap through shadows in mini teleport bursts (that use up their feet of movement) but this is in no way similar to 3e or pathfinder. They use pocket dimensions to store things that they can access at any times and a few more goodies :) I dont wanna spoil everything!

Hey friend! I assume you are talking about the easter hunt on Instagram. That is not the easter egg. The easter was already found to be honest! The guitar is just the bard's weapon.

I would have changed "Seed of Destruction" to 4d12 damage per round rather than 3d12. Even 4d12 with the 5 rounds of damage cap (and the concentration requirement that makes it challenging to last that long), it would still put it on the low end of average damage for a 9th level spell.

The enemies do not get to save though, that was my thinking behind keeping it to 3d12. I run the numbers a few times and figured that 3d12 was strong but not gamebreaking (especially since it can be done to up to 5 people and can ramp up to 15d12 damage with the extremely right conditions). It is a really niche spell to be honest but I'll write down your input and think on it for our next update! Thanks for the feedback!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
