To use this rulebook, a Dungeon Master also needs the Player's Handbook, the Dungeon Master's Guide, and the Monster Manual.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

FYI for anyone interested, the Forgotten Forge (the intro adventure included in this book) is now available separately, for free, here:

I'm interested in Eberron, but not THAT interested. Is this one book enough, or do I have to buy the Player's Guide as well?

Just this book is enough on its own. The Player's Guide is more about digging down a little into the various places a character might come from across the world and giving some extra context on the kind of stuff a PC would know from their perspective.

Does anyone know if we can buy The Forgotten Forge separately? I have the 5e campaign setting book, and don't really want to buy this entire source book in order to get just the intro adventure to adapt.

Does anyone know if the PDF is searchable?

Yes, you can. This was the questions I was really wanting to know. I have the physical book from long ago, but at the table I want to use my surface (tablet) to scan for things fast, not spend time flipping pages. I just bought it and was able to search the pdf for "cleric" and "fighter" to test it out, and it worked. To me this is worth the $10 in itself. I love having hardback books, for study and casual reading, but when it comes to play time, I prefer to use digital for faster searching.

Why isn't this hardcover? I don't understand the logic on softcover for the big books, they won't last long as softcovers.

Because hardcover print-on-demand is prohibitively expensive. And then the comments would be full of "what a rip-off/why is this so pricey/why isn't this softcover?"

I've bought hardcover POD from here before. It's not "prohibitively" expensive. Adding another option doesn't remove the softcover option. Buy the cheap version if you like - I want something that lasts.

he meant expensive for the company to manufacture, not for you to buy. just because you want a hardcover 3.5 eberron book doesn't mean it's worth WotC's money to start paying to have those printed. and you know what lasts even longer than hardcover? a PDF stored on the cloud.

No he didn't. Re-read what he wrote - he said that if they sold a HC people would have to pay a lot and then would complain that it cost too much.

Also you are wrong about it costing WotC too much. The entire point of Print on Demand is that they only have to print what's demanded. They don't make a bunch at a time and hope they sell - they make them one at a time for each order. If no one orders one, they don't lose money. And of course I'm sure WotC is smart enough to price a HC to the point it would make money if someone ordered one.

I think they may sometimes not allow a hardcover option if it could impact the collector's aftermarket, but I am not sure....the reasons for why one book is offered in a certain format over another seems to be opaque and random these days.

I'm happy to see this finally as PoD, but I'll hold out for hardcover, myself. After all, the 4e version is available for that option.

Where can we find details on the size of the softcover print option?

I just got mine today. It's REALLY nice. It's about 8 1/2" x 11" in surface area and maybe 1.25" thick.

The paper is solid and it's in color. I'm VERY happy with it. :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
