ADD TO WISHLIST >

A Silver Bestselling Product on the Dungeon Masters Guild! Thank you for all of the support.

The Laureate Trials is a guild-based clockwork adventure, ideal for a group of brand new heroes (level 1). Created during the RPG Writer Workshop 2019.

Welcome to the Laureate Guild!

The player characters have been invited to compete in the infamous Laureate Trials. The Laureates are a well-known adventuring guild. Once a year, they allow a select group of known adventurers to take part in the Laureate Trials. The prize is becoming an official member of the Laureates, with all the perks and responsibilities that awards. Rumour has it that new initiates will be awarded a coveted Laureate Pin, with special powers of communication.

This adventure is a starting module, designed for new players and Game Masters. It should take up to 2 hours with a standard group of 4 players. Everything you need to know is contained inside or in the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Rules. It is ideal for helping a beginning group of heroes get started and giving them a motivation for further adventures. Inside, there are Trials to test Agility, Wits and Combat, plus a special encounter at the end which will determine the fate of a forgotten individual.

The Laureate Trials contains:

  • 20+ pages of pure adventure
  • An Appendix with anything you might need to reference
  • 3 new magic items
  • A Laureate Guild Invitation handout
  • A Trial of Wits puzzle handout (plus solution)
  • 2 maps to help you run the adventure

This is a fun title for new and newish players. It is described as being for level 1 players, and it could be awesome for them. We are all 2-4 level and it was still great fun and gave players a lot of opportunity to practice a variety of skills that we don't always do a lot, without feeling practicey.

The trial of agility was longer than we anticipated, and the trial of wits was really short, because one of my players guessed it pretty quick! ( smartypants!) so the pacing was a little funny for us, but I think that will a smaller group of players ( we had 8) it would be more balanced. And that did not detract from the fun.

Lastly, we have a homebrew campaign going, and it was fun to take this adventure and drop it into our established campaign. It is flexible enough its writing to be stand alone or part of a bigger story. I hope this author keeps writing more campaigns! Nice job!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
