SOLVE THE RIDDLE UNDER THE WAVES

An ancient legend, a missing wife, and a broken heart that time won’t mend.

Bourne of Candles is a four-hour adventure for 3-7 characters of level 1-4, balanced for five 4th-level characters. It is the fourth part of the Elvenflow Saga, a series of standalone adventures set on the banks of the Elvenflow Estuary near the shore of the Moonsea. These adventures premiered at the UK Games Expo and are designed to evoke the feel of the classic UK series of modules: strong stories, rich on folklore, with plenty of scope for roleplaying.

Bourne of Candles was designed by Ian Hawthorne and features a cover by Stacey Allan. This adventure premiered at the UK Games Expo in Birmingham on June 2019.

Hey Ian!

I have a question about the Story Awards in the CCC-UK series; UK-2 and UK-3 both have story awards which just say “you can get a reward from the Bourne of Candles in CCC-UK-4” but to my reading there is no reference to those rewards in CCC-UK-4!

Any suggestions? I’d love to award a potion or a scroll if they get one reward, and a common magic item if they get both, but I wanna stay within the lines of AL… anything I can do here?

Thanks in advance, and really loving the story, very much looking forward to bringing my players into the Estuary :)

Sorry for the late reply, was only just made aware of your question. I'm afraid I didn't have a hand in the writing of UK2 or UK3, so not sure what they are refering to. The "Bourne of Candles" is probably a reference to the man himself, and was perhaps hinting towards a story reward such as "Friend of the Bourne". I did have plans for further adventures set in the area which would have hinted further of why the hags and bourne crossed swords in the first place, but with the changing ways of AL sady this never happened. Best wishes, Ian H.

I played this and loved it. If you like an intriguing mystery and gothic romance – with a touch of sea salt – then I think you will, too. The setting is creepy and haunting and reminded me of some of the best Ravenloft adventures. There are some genuinely poignant scenes and that's hard to pull off in a roleplaying game. But it's not just a great story – the encounters are challenging enough that you will need to bring your "A" game. Buy this now and persuade your favourite GM to run it for you. ;-)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
