CCC-GREY-01-01 A Rat's Tale

ADD TO WISHLIST >

When a collection of rare books disappears from a wealthy landlord’s vault, adventurers are dispatched to sleuth out the thief and bring the tomes back home. But perhaps some knowledge is better buried than claimed… A collection of four 1 hour adventures for Tier 1 Characters. Optimized for APL 3.

In this series of short intro modules, the adventurers' hunt for the mysterious thief will lead them on a wild romp through the city of Hillsfar, where they will find themselves caught up in a raucous tavern brawl, solving magical puzzle boxes with a tempermental halfling, and contending with the baddest mobster this side of Waterdeep! An excellent series of adventures for introducing new players to Dungeons and Dragons.

I ran the adventure last night (will post a review), and the players asked why there was no magic item unlock? I'll be running this at PAXAus for the next three days.

Good question! It has to do with the changing adventure format at that time. When it was first being written, it was right near the end of Season 7, and at that time there was going to be a magic item. When the preliminary guidelines for Season 8 CCCs came out, I was asked to follow those guidelines, and I was told that no magic item could be given out in a collection of mini adventures, but that I could do so if I wrote it as a 4-hour adventure. It was too late to re-write the whole adventure to not include the item at all, so I adjusted for that format, but after doing so the Season 8 CCC rules were finalized and I was required to switch to them in order to publish. In those it specified that Tier 1 adventures could only unlock magic items on Table A or B. Since I couldn't put in the unlock anyway, I went ahead and swapped back to a collection of mini adventures, but unfortunately with no item. I also wish the item could be unlocked! It's always been one of my favorites in D&D.

Thanks Colby, this is one of my favourite Tier 1 adventures. It's interesting to know the background to the creation of the module. These things seem to take a long time.

I'm glad to hear you like it! CCCs can definitely be a lot of time and effort to get made, but it's always really rewarding to see them run, especially at their premier con.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
