Savage Coast Campaign Book (2e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome to THE SAVAGE COAST, TSR#2521, the first product from the AD&D ODYSSEY line, and TSR's first fully online product!

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Is this the Red Steel/Savage Baronies Box set material? It sounds very familiar?

No, this is a fan-made PDF set in the same area. It's been available for free on the Vaults of Pandius for a very long time, posted there by the people who created it.
Parts of the text were taken from a free product (a text file if I remember correctly) released by TSR on their website in the late 90s. It's pretty crazy this is now on here as a paid product. Even more so considering it is being passed off as an official TSR release.

Um... This is a fan-made PDF, created from the files released free to the Internet by the publishers back in the 90s. The layout artist is Alex Boucher, aka avatar of the Spam Overlord — as noted in this PDF.

It has been freely available at the official Mystara fan site, the Vaults of Pandius, since 2007.

I’m not sure why this is now appearing as a paid product. If it were in print, that would be wonderful indeed, as this product has never been released in print before.

My link to the Vaults of Pandius was wrong. It should be:

Why are you saying it is a Fan-made product when the book you linked to clearly states it is copyright 1996 by TSR? I know you do a lot of work on the Mystara front ;)

But this looks like it was a legitimate TSR product. It's also listed on WIkipedia. https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Mystara

I think you might want to be careful about posting links to people posting copywritten material here ;)

The text and images (though not necessarily all of the graphics) were released by TSR in the late 90s, and posted online for free. Over the years, fans have turned the bare text files into progressively more professional-looking PDFs, presenting the same text as TSR posted all those years ago, but in a prettier form.

The Vaults of Pandius is the official Mystara fan site, as designated by Wizards of the Coast in the late 90s (as I understand it). It hosts a vast range of fan creations for Mystara, based in varying degrees on the original official products. Some cleave very close, adapting or re-presenting official stuff, while others are wholly original works.

In any case, yes the text and images are all by TSR, now copyright Wizards of the Coast. But the layout and likely some of the artwork was not done by TSR, nor Wizards, and they should not be selling it unless they have the permission of the artists.

WoTC has the rights since they own the artwork. To be fair, whoever did the layouts did it without permission. They can't complain about permission and copyrights when they didn't get them to begin with ;)

It seems ridiculous to be having this discussion. Here’s why:

1996: TSR posts the text documents, with associated art, freely online.
2006: A fan named Alex Boucher turns this stuff into a nice set of PDFs.
2007: The PDFs are added to the official fan site, Vaults of Pandius.
2021: Wizards puts the fan-created PDFs up for sale.

We’re talking about a book that was released for free to the Internet 25 years ago, which fans turned into PDFs 15 years ago. It has been legitimately available to download, for free, for all that time, first from TSR, then Wizards, then the official fan site — where it still is to this day.

I am not arguing against their right to sell the book. Of course they own the copyright on the text and images. But there are two problems:

One, it is unethical to sell someone else’s layout work without compensation. It’s also highly unprofessional.

Two, the same PDF is legitimately available on the Wizards-endorsed...See more

I have to agree. I thought this looked a little familiar, especially given the original was text, as you said. So, I did an archive dive in what I have saved from the past. And, there it was.

I was hoping for the art and maps from the original Red Steel book. Much of which was, and is, great.

Further, the lack of any real product information on the product page is not a good sign. I would have liked some of the short history bits and background info that we see in most of the older products.

I am disappointed, really, with all this. A little effort would have been nice. I don't mind paying for a modern scan of an older product. Such is life, I suppose.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
