Tap Untap Burn 5 Color Mana Spell Point Variant Rules Knights and Tricksters

This book offers an alternate spellcasting system that replaces the 8 schools of magic with 5 colors of magic, and uses colored spell points matching the color of spells you cast.  The mechanics are minimal for DMs to incorporate into any setting, and are perfect for Ravnica, Theros, and other MtG settings,

alternate preview link:

Knights and Tricksters highlights how both eldritch knights and arcane tricksters use these mechanics to become the most versatile casting classes without being overpowered.
This book provides...
new magic paradigm
new spell point system
new concentration rules
new spellcasting ability rules
new subclass features for both eldritch knights and arcane tricksters
sample characters and NPCs for Player and DM inspiration
mana flowchart

The colors of magic are strongly inspired by the 5 colors from Magic: the Gathering. For MTG enthusiasts.. The full preview link above shows how the spells are arranged between the colors.  For those new to 5 color magic, the different aspects of each color as a facet of magic is described to understand why spells are devoted to each color without having to do any work yourself to begin using this magic paradigm.

Included with purchase is an editable spreadsheet... You are able to define your own aspects of each color and sort the spells to fit your campaign to provide as player handouts and reference documents if desired.
You are MOST WELCOME to send me your own color devoted spell lists to see who can build a better balance among the colors... I actively challenge you to change my mind and if you can beat my balance of 5e mechanics with MTG aesthetics, I will revise the publication, include a page of credit to your accomplishment and offer a free character portrait commission which will honor your page of credit.

Hey team! the zip file has been updated with the spells from Fizban's Treasury of Dragons and Strixhaven! Also-- an overall product redesign in formatting and spell selection variant rules is in on the workbench for 2022! Here's a video where the new spells are being added to the list while discussing the future changes to how spell / color devotion will work moving forward:
Stay tuned! we're just getting started!

we are now only a few weeks away from Core Mechanics being published! Knights and Tricksters is a very deep dive for these two subclasses specifically, and only about 6 pages of the 75 Core Mechanic pages are duplicated from this knights and Tricksters.
WotC is not likely to ever explore this space until a good portion of DnD fans are MTG fans, so your go-to for color mana mechanics until then is here on the DMsGuild and on twitter @filkearney.
Big thanks to the 1000 fans who had already downloaded the previews!

8 illustrations to go!
We're also up to 21 pages, plus a separate spreadsheet of all the Player's Handbook spells available to Knights and Tricksters that players and DMs can anguish over which color each spell should be devoted to... If anyone can provide more balanced list options that what will be provided I am VERY open to revising once enough feedback comes in (if any)

The book has expanded beyond previous expectations with the amount of content both mechanically and art. Cost is being reevaluated for both the book itself and the art offered separately. Regardless of final pricing, this bundled with Tap Untap Burn Core Mechanics in April will still provide a $5 discount for both together.
For those that acquired the art bundle along with this free preview, you have license to use the art you have already downloaded.
If you DL'd this preview, you'll be getting a notification through DMsGuild alerts that it has been updated!

New Update!

Knights and Tricksters is 12 illustrations from being released! KT has grown to 19 pages and is stacked with 17 pieces of art and NPC quick stats DMs can use to build fast encounters using Knights and Tricksters!
Art is going to be offered separately from the book so I can keep the initial $5 price point for the supplement and the 17 pieces of art will be $10, which will be immediately bundled for $10 so you can get them BOTH $5 off. :)

CORE Mechanics is coming along fantastic! Since Knights and Tricksters won't wait any longer, CORE is being pushed back to April release. There's 28 images left for the Core Mechanics to finish between now and then... April is looking very reasonable. I blame biting off a work load of 58 paintings to load into the 75 pages of solid mechanics... If you're watching the livestream at, you've been seeing the pages I'm working on and the art being built into it... I could not be more proud!

Thanks...See more

Looking at January 2020 for Knights and Tricksters revisions to take effect with the release of the full Tap Untap Burn supplement (referred to here as 5CM). This will be changed from PWYW recommending $5 to being $5... so get it now while you can.
WHEN full Tap Untap Burn is released, Knights and Tricksters will be bundled with the 5CM at a $5 discount for you all who grabbed K&T now!

What we will be seeing ADDED to what is already provided here...

2. Dual mana progression for devotion to a primary and secondary color
3. Alternate sources of magic different from arcane along with the associated spellcasting ability scores to diversify the mechanics and flavor of your Knights and Tricksters (portions relevant to martial classes dupicated from 5CM)

Just providing an update here for folks checking in:
Tap Untap Burn the full book is on the way. I had some editors chew on the draft to make sure it reads easily for newcomers, so there's been some revising that slowed production. I was angling for Q4 a few months ago, but now I'm looking at Q1 2020. This delayed release is SO worth the extra effort and time.
I'm very thankful to everyone that's keeping tabs and excited to have the final release.
Be sure to grab this as PWYW while you can! This will become $5 once Tap Untap Burn is fully released, and there will be more supplements folliowing....
- Martial Mana = adding colored mana to your martial classes including Barbarians (looking at you, Gruul clans!)
- Ravnica Guide to Color Mana = converting the guilds of ravnica to their native paradigm; 5 color mana along with subclasses built specifically to use this paradigm so each guild can embrace all classes
- Artifacts and Tapping feats = magic gear and more options...See more

In the preview you have "web" in the "Red" column.

Have you ever played Magic the Gathering? "Web" is 100% GREEN!

Thank you for calling this out! That is a keen observation, and congratulations on being FIRST!
You will probably disagree with other color choices as well, which is fine!

When producing this work we have to look at what spells are in the Player's Handbook vs what are MTG Green cards, White cards, etc. and when the spells were distributed based solely on MTG aesthetics; there was barely anything in Green at all while White and Blue were saturated with spells from the Player's Handbook.

This is the biggest challenge to bringing MTG aesthetics into D&D. Instead of rewriting all spells in the Player's Handbook to comply with MTG logic, the simplest solution is to change the definition of colors to provide the best playing experience for D&D, so while some spells are obvious to one color using MTG logic, after redefining what the colors mean for D&D, and then devoting the spells in the Player's Handbook to the colors according to THAT logic-- web became Red. ...See more

Follow up: Progress is coming along! we're through final edits and moving to page layout. When released, I'll be providing a .zip file of editable spell list charts for each class along with the art for anyone to use. You'll be able to move spells from one color to another to build customized lists for your own builds as you wish, with DM agreement.

Hey! wanted to let you know that I've been listening to folks' feedback and I've shifted some spells around for the book with web and spider climb both going to green.
when the book is released (KT next month... Core mechanics in April) they'll both have zip folders with spreadsheets for folks t o make their own list by cuttiong and pasting around, so keep an eye out for it.

and, if you have any other suggestins definitely post them here so I can re-calibrate and balance what's in the actual book.

thanks again!

here's how to use Knights and Tricksters--
1. pick Eldritch Knight or Arcane Trickster
2. Decide which color of magic you want to devote your character to
3. Decide which casting ability to use and whether you cast as divine, arcane, etc
4. Bulid your custom spell list from the color you devoted your character to

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
