AE01-08 March of Madness by Andrew Bishkinskyi

Sealed deep below the Shadow Marches lies a gateway to the realm of madness itself. It must be kept closed at any cost.

Test your sanity with the eighth adventure of the Across Eberron: Convergence Manifesto adventure path with this adventure for 5th level characters. Written for use with either Eberron: Rising from the Last War or the Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron by Keith Baker.

Adventure Summary: Millennia ago, aberrations from Xoriat, the Realm of Madness, were driven from Eberron. The Gatekeeper druids–mostly orcs–placed powerful dimensional seals throughout Khorvaire to prevent the creatures of Xoriat from returning. To repair a breach in one of the seals at a settlement called Tjorda, a Sealguard Complex was built. An immortal guardian ws tasked with attending to the repaired crack in the seal. Thousands of years later, the Gatekeeper druids rediscovered the sealed complex. Even without knowing its precise history, they ascertained its sacred nature and have  guarded it from then on. Being sealed in to protect the site and commune with the inner guardian is considered a great honor. Much of this history has long-since been forgotten. But 10 years prior to the adventure’s start, Vilda Karrte–a relic hunter with her own agenda–tracks a Xoriat artifact called the Spiral Well to the complex. Turned away by the Gatekeeper, she forces her way inside, grievously injuring them. Having discovered Vilda’s journals, Provost Nigel Faurious, through the Clifftop Adventurers’ Guild Handler Lhara, tasks the adventurers with recovering the Spiral Well.

Across Eberron ( is an Eberron community project that aims to tell the stories and exploits of heroic characters in Eberron and introduce players--new and experienced--to the wonderful lore and rich history the setting has to offer. Edited by Will Brolley, Wayne Chang, and Laura Hirsbrunner, along with executive producer Keith Baker.

I'm not sure if I'm overlooking it, but I can't seem to find light conditions for within the complex--both the circular corridor and the individual rooms, though some of the latter can be inferred from things like glowing glyphs or the one room with magical darkness. Is there an intended light condition--dim light or complete darkness, I assume--that should be taken as the default?

The intent is that there is no light unless something is glowing, though insofar as I can remember, this is not intended to be a major hurdle for the characters, except in the darkness room.

Thanks for the quick response, Andrew! That's what I was going to go with; just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking anything. It's not a major hurdle, of course, though it does potentially affect perception checks throughout the adventure, depending on players' choices concerning light sources. (My players all have darkvision and tend to rely on it in order to be sneaky, so this means disadvantage on all perception checks throughout, for the most part.)

I'm really looking forward to running it!

After the final encounter, "several artifacts related to the Xoriat Invasion and the daelkyr" are mentioned, but nothing is included or expanded on beyond the Spiral Well. Are there any particular items that would fit well?

Hello! This was purposely left open-ended to prevent those playing through the series from attaching any unnecessary importance to it. This is a good opportunity to seed an item if you want to run your own xoriat-related adventures later. In terms of what it can be, these could be things like a piece of stone with strange writing, a preserved plant or part of tentacle of somesort, a strange but mundane weapon. The word "artifact" is meant in the common sense not in the "item of rarity greater legendary" sense :)

Some errors I spotted while running AE01-08:
* p. 9 the Trapped Chest says it requires a Con saving throw but doesn't list a DC. Same issue on p. 15.
* p. 11 the weak adjustment for the Akleu is to give it 75 HP, but the stat block has it at 75 HP by default.
* p. 16 the Chest of History says it is locked but there is no way to unlock it.
* p. 26 Vilda has the wrong stats for her Con, Int, Wis, and Cha. Her Con should be +2 (since her HP is +28 and she's 14th-level), Int should be -1 (since her Arcana/History are +4), Wis should be -1 (since her Wis save is +4), and her Cha should be +2 (since her save DC is 15).

Hi, thanks for pointing these out. The adventure used to have some slightly different scaling which was adjusted after playtesting, I think resulting in most of these. I'm passing the corrections on to the editor, but also posting them here fyi:

Page 9. Save DC is 15
page 11. This should read 65 hitpoints
page 16. The unlock DC is 13
page 26. Vilda's correct stats are 9 / 14 / 15 / 12 / 12 / 18 (There are no errors in her other stats, only in the scores themselves).

Would love to hear how the adventure went!

Just chiming in with what I think is another typo, though I downloaded it a while ago, so maybe it's been fixed.

Page 11: the keys on the akleu should be for Area C, not Area B.

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
