The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh – a Ghosts of Saltmarsh DM's Resource

Welcome to Christmas in July! In celebration, this digital title has been marked down by up to 40%! For more of Santa's savings, visit our Christmas in July sale page.

The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh is the first adventure of seven in the Ghosts of Saltmarsh campaign book. It features undead horrors, smugglers, pirates (parrots and hooks included!) and an ominous threat of more dangers to come, as the adventurers must fight to unravel a smuggling ring delivering weapons to a tribe of lizardfolk.

In other words – there's plenty to deal with and more than enough to plan for, when running the Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh for your players. In this document, we aim to help you, the DM, make The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh a fun and exciting experience for both you and your players – and saving you countless hours of preparation in the process.

This download includes:

  • Running SSoS – extra advice on how to move the adventure to the Forgotten Realms, additional hooks to get your players started, tips on adjusting the adventure's difficulty, an example introduction to Saltmarsh and ideas on how to handle Ned Shakeshaft.
  • 3 full-scale battlemaps primed for digital tabletop – the maps show the Haunted House's ground floor, upper floor, cellar and caverns, as well as a complete map of the Sea Ghost. They come in both players' and DM's versions, and feature furnishings from Mike Schley's Schleyscapes.
  • DM's Notes – thorough sheets of notes condensing the adventure into convenient bulletpoints.
  • Creature Stat Blocks – all monsters of the adventure arranged on pages that are easily referenced at the table.

Just saying, but the proposed hook (the party is hired to investigate on smuggling activities in the mansion) just defeats the purpose of a so-called 'haunted house'.
The two alternative hooks are too specific and won't work for my party.
And the plot with Ned still doesn't make sense (the guy is hopeless)...
I was hoping for a bit more from this DM guide (bought the bundle), hopefully I'll enjoy the other scenarios better.

I had expectations and some of them were no met. An example? On the Sea Ghost there is a Pirate Wizard, one of the "spoils" is his spellbook. The Ghosts of Saltmarsh doesn't have this detailed out. I would have thought this product would have. It didn't. The little things like that which makes products like this valuable. Not having to take time away to create details. 3/5

Hi there - just wondering if I am doing something wrong as an FGU newbie - are the players maps set up with LOS like the ones in the Ghosts of Saltmarsh from WOTC?

Overall this is quite good and a solid value. However, I would really have liked a Printer Friendly version. 4/5

I purchased the Ghosts of Saltmarsh kit...packet...thingy on Roll20 which comes with maps and handouts and things all primed for Roll20. Had I seen this it looks like I might have saved some money. That said, would I be getting any value out of this product?

Hi Michael

Yes, I would say so (but I'm biased, so take it with a grain of salt, of course!) You'll get more colorful and vibrant maps, advice on running the adventure, as well as handy DM's notes which you can use to run your session smoothly.

Best regards,

I have a question, can these be used for roll 20? I'm interested in trying to dm and am curious if this would be better than the bundle on their site

Have the printable maps of the Sea Ghost disappeared from the download again? I'm not seeing them...

How are people running Xendros and her connection to Iuz as translated into The Forgotten Realms? I've read somewhere that one person converted her to having connections with Thay, but I'm curious as to how others are handing it.

Great resource, thank you! I noticed a missing item in Sanbalet’s quarters (room 22): Sanbalet’s oilskin smuggler’s coat, worth 5 gp.

this looks great, but my primary reason for purchasing today was for the printable map of the Sea Ghost. The map was not included in my ZIP file. This is urgent, I need it tonight!

I have no idea how, but you are absolutely right that they've disappeared from the download. They're reuploading as we speak, but I can see that that might not help you much at this point. I'm terribly sorry. If you send us an email at, we'll do our best to make it up to you.

Sorry again!

I’ve got some great photos of the maps printed out and in action but I can’t post photos here. I’ll send them your way.

Hey guys, great resource. The only issue I have is that your map for the Sea Ghost is not properly offset for a grid. While the grid size and placement is fine, you still have to offset the image in order for a grid to line up on VTT. Please consider making these maps so that the top left of the image is the 'start' of the grid, not some arbitrary point somewhere else. The other maps don't have this issue. Example:

Hi Matt!

Thanks for pointing it out! You are absolutely right, it seems to be a problem created in post-production cropping. We've recropped the map now, and it should work better.

Thanks again for taking the time to making us aware and for your support! :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
