Love this so much! My partner and I have tried and failed many times to get into D&D with a group but our lack of experience made it hard to keep up. After skimming through all three parts I think this is going to be perfect for us both to practice our RP skills. A few notes on ease of use: 1) it would be great if the battle maps were available as separate JPGs or PNGs (5MB or smaller) for use with virtual tabletops; trying to extract them from the PDF without distorting them has been a complete nightmare. 2) having the Stat Blocks put in separate layers or attachments so that it's easier to switch to them without losing my place in the adventure would also make things a lot easier for those of us without access to a printer

I did manage to get the maps as PNGs using GIMP and a calculator to resize the images after pasting since they didn't want to keep their original proportions (I just assumed each square was meant to be 70x70px and that worked just fine), and for the stat blocks I used a free online tool to extract the relevant pages as a separate PDF that I keep open in a secondary tab in Adobe

Hi Jaimie,
I'm so glad that this will be a good fit for you and your partner! That was a major factor in me starting playing D&D through duets too; it's intimidating to jump in with a group, especially when everyone has been playing for a long time!

I will share your map suggestion with Jonathan and see if there's something more we can do. The adventures are available on FantasyGrounds, but that doesn't help if you're using a different virtual tabletop. We've tried to figure out keeping the maps separate before, but I haven't found a way to do it outside of listing individual files, and that starts to get cluttered and confusing.

Thank you for sharing how you got it to work! I hope that helps others between now and when we (hopefully) figure out an efficient way to add maps individually.

These look like a lot of fun and a great way to get started! But... what's the difference between the pairs of files for Second Glance and Third Time's the Charm? Should I print all 4 or just the non-PF ones?

Hi Dale,
So the PF ones are the printer-friendly versions with the pictures removed, but the others, at least the Second Glance one, are more up-to-date. We've stopped creating printer-friendly versions because there hasn't been very much demand for them. So I'd suggest picking one of the two pairs, and you should be set from there!
Thanks!

Hi Dean,
I'm reposting this response from First Blush in case anyone else has the same question :)

I'm so excited to hear that you and your friend are looking at getting into one-on-one D&D! You don't need any books for this adventure series, though you may need to reference the 5th edition SRD (5thsrd.org is my favorite site for this).

Please let me know if there's anything else we can do to help!

I think the idea is great and I glad that it was made and is available for new players and DMs. I'm going to run this soon.

But there are so many inconsistencies in story about locations! Just with a brief look of 15 minutes I found at least three of them.
And now I have to double check every location name in scenario to check if that name is from Faerun or original Estra-Duhn and I didn't expect that I would have to do that.

Also for me, it was a terrible idea to make a scenario with arbitrary location in mind, because it is no harder to move story from one world to another world, then to put abstract story to particular world. But in the latter case I am forced to do that. And since Forgotten Realms is so rich world, in my opinion, it would be great if all story was updated with particular location in Faerun in mind.

Thanks for such great story!

Aleksey,

Thank you for taking the time to check out our work and to let us know what you think. It means a lot to us to hear from people who are enjoying our work. I'm especially pleased that you liked the story! I hear your concern about the setting.

Our titles have recently been updated in hopes to address this setting confusion.

This bundle includes the first adventures that we ever put together. Admittedly, setting was a difficulty for us from the beginning. When First Blush first came out, we set it in a new place because we didn't know much about the Realms. This was a problem on a couple fronts, but a big one was because you can't do that on DMs Guild.

The Crystalline Curse Trilogy is set in the Forgotten Realms in and around Amn to the south and east of Baldur's Gate. Estra'Duhn isn't a thing and we've tried to scrub it from the adventures.

First Blush is in Amn and then in the Cloud Peaks near Amn.
Second Glance is in the foothills...See more

The character sheets still seem to reference Es'tra Dunh... It's going to be pretty confusing for a first time player (and/or DM!) if the locations don't match throughout the content...

Just finished the three parts of Crystalline Curse, and my wife loved it so much she wants to take Ellie, Remmy, and Garren on a full campaign. Teleporting from Amn to the Cloud Peaks makes sense, as they're on the way to Waterdeep. I'm really struggling to find a plausible means for an unconscious party to get from the Cloud Peaks to the Serpent Hills several hundred (600-700) miles away. The Cloakwood makes slightly more sense, since it is located along the Coast Way and known to have Fey, though the Wood of Sharp Teeth is probably a better candidate for Were-bear Druids. This would allow the Party to travel for less than a week unconscious and two-three days within the wood after waking.

We are so happy to hear that your wife loved the trilogy and wants to take the characters on a full campaign! That’s so exciting! These characters are really special to us too, so that’s great to hear!

And these are great points about the locations. Thank you for sharing your ideas with us. We’re midway through a revision across the trilogy, so there are some inconsistencies between the First Blush locations and where the party goes in Second Glance, but we’re working on completing the update so that the locations work across the trilogy.

Thanks again for sharing!

Hi, Beth! I just finished First Blush with my girlfriend and I also found the setting inconsistancies. Thank you for making revisions, both now and previously.

I would love to know where I can find when you have completed the updates, like a specific forum or your website or something, so I can check up on it.

Also, I'm new to DMing. Should I wait a bit for your updates to come out so I can have an easier time with the setting, or do you think that would be too long?

Thank you again for all your work.

I'm looking forward to hearing Beth's feedback as well! I'm actually prepping this trilogy for my first time DM'ing, and my wife's first time playing D&D and I'm super excited to get us started this weekend!

I've read through both First Blush and Second Glance and have considered the settings myself using an interactive map of The Forgotten Realms (https://www.aidedd.org/atlas/index.php?map=R&l=1). If Strahmin's Peak is located within the Cloud Peak mountains, the distance between the Eastern-most edge of the Cloud Peaks and the "widest point in the Snakewood" (as stated in Second Glance) is over roughly 200 miles at scale, though in the same descriptive paragraph it states the druid settlement is only a couple hours travel from Strahmin's Peak. I think the easiest way to transition the characters would be to change the setting from Snakewood to the Wood of Sharp Teeth to the North of the Cloud Peak mountains. It's only 100 miles, which is still far, but within a more reasonable...See more

Hi Aaron,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful note and questions! We'll post a notification here on DMsGuild when we've updated the adventures, and you can also join our mailing list on our website at dndduet.com. (Look for "Join our community!")

Welcome to the world of DMing! I'm so excited for you and for your girlfriend!

To answer your question on the revisions, I think that making a few small shifts to the setting would mean that you don't have to wait on me. (And I am always in favor of playing D&D, even if we have to make up a few things, as opposed to not playing!) If you see the comments below from Derek, I think those setting shifts are wonderful! (My thanks to both Derek and Not W above for the setting relocation suggestions.) The adventure should still run the same, just tweaked, since the PC doesn't spend conscious game-play-time between the two locations. So in short, I think you'd be safe to move Second Glance to the Wood of Sharp Teeth and go from...See more

Hi Derek,
I love your setting ideas here so much! Thank you for the research you put into it—that interactive map is really cool! My revision plan at the moment is to move Second Glance from the Snakewood to the Wood of Sharp Teeth, and I'm working on the 100-mile distance to ensure that makes sense/explain how they convey the PC unconscious across that space.

I am really excited for you and your wife! First Blush is how Jonathan and I started playing together and how I learned to play, and I love that you're already doing so much to dig into the story and world to prep for your game with your wife! I hope this weekend goes so well for you (and I'm certain that it will!).

I'm working on the revisions, and I'll get them posted as soon as I can!

It's been a while but thought I'd give my input once again.

To justify the 100-mile distance between the Cloudpeaks and the southern edge of the Wood fo Sharp Teeth, I had narrated at the end of First Blush the avalanche and then ending the session and the second session (Second Glance) began with her PC waking up in the druid's hut. The cliff-hanger of the avalanche works great and my wife loved waiting in suspense until the next session!

I roleplayed the druid explaining the character was found by a group of rangers who were heading to the druid grove to trade provisions. They saw the avalanche from the mountain pass and spotted some figures being swallowed by the snow. They were able to retrieve the PC and brought them to the druids for care (a 3-day journey at a fast pace). The PC was unconscious for 10 days total, giving 3 days of travel from the mountains and 7 days asleep/incoherent in the druid grove, before finally waking up. Chronologically This also means the PC has missed...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
