The Living Weapon

The Living Weapon is a class for 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons. It takes the classic trope of a creature built for war and explores what it might look like as a heroic class. Piece together your own walking death machine today with 38 different forms to choose from.

Version 1.1: Improved readability, corrected a handful of typos, added three new melee forms and one new core, changed armor options.

Version 1.2: Tightened up the wording of various forms.  Added six variant base forms, these are designed to give players more out of combat options and build living weapons that have specific weaknesses.

Version 2.0: Added the Blowgun ranged form, the Crystal and Warp cores, and the Linguist variant base form.  Corrected various typos and did a big readability pass to bring the class more in line with the WotC style.

Roadmap: This is pretty close to a final version.  I have a player who will be playtesting the class in one of the games I'm running which should lead to some refinements, but at this point I'm just focused on sanding down the rough edges.  If anyone gets the chance to test this thing out at your table feedback is very much appreciated.

Hi, just here to give you a bit of feedback on your class.

Overall, a very strong showing, there's a lot of cool ideas, seems real fun to play and is basically a modular build a class, which i always love to see.

I have spotted 1 problem of note with this class however.

5 of the Core forms (Specifically the Gravity, Healing, Projector, Crystal and Warp cores) have no consistent way of doing damage whatsoever (specifically, they are lacking a damage cantrip except for the warp core, who's damage cantrip is thunderclap), this is a problem, because someone may want to stay in these forms and channel their beam over the course of a battle, only to discover that they can do barely anything with their now freed up actions at the same time as their speed has has been dramatically reduced.

It is worth noting that because you are using warlock spell-casting for this class (not a bad move in and of itself, and probably for the best overall) you can't rely on spells to...See more

Hey Jonathon,

Always good to get feedback. I actually did spend a bit of time mulling over whether or not to give the forms you mention a damage cantrip, but I just couldn't justify it. The supportive forms are designed to swing a battle specifically without dealing much in the way of damage. For the cores you mention it is a big investment in action economy to use those beams at early levels, staying in those forms and continuing to channel the beams should be something that needs to be mulled over. It's not always the wrong choice, but it is a big one. Given the sheer variety of things the class is capable of I don't necessarily want them to be sitting in a single form the entire fight. With something like the healing core it is ideally designed to fire off a heal or two, maybe set up a buff spell, and then swap over to a different form.

I don't disagree that adding a damage cantrip would make them more attractive options, but my vision of what those cores were capable of didn't...See more

That explains a lot, it seems what i have noticed is somewhat intentional, which is fine, i see what you were going for, i guess it just brings me back to my point that the beams abilities alone simply don't make the cut to actually do what you intended them to do, i feel like 3-5 temp hp on one or two allies for example is not enough to swing a battle, and while i might be wrong, (i admit i'm not an expert), it feels a little obvious that the temp hp would go away in a single attack! its continued presence has some value i suppose, but instead i could be doing so much more than that. I just don't think it is simply enough to swing the battle in most cases (some do get rather powerful though at higher levels, but at early levels it is a problem)

Which means we are relying on spells to create that swing effect you are going for, in and of itself not a bad idea, but the reason i have a problem with it is that it will appear very rarely, maybe once or twice per short rest, (at this point i will admit...See more

I wish to point out that the Shuriken form's ability titled Edge Case does not specify a level, though it's position in the list leads me to believe it is a 15th level ability. Additionally, on the topic of that ability, are you required to make a separate attack against each target in the line?

In all other aspects, I really like the concept of this class. It reminds of Genos from One Punch Man a little bit.

Thanks for catching that. It's certainly meant to be a 15th level thing, I'll clarify it in the next update. It was intended that you make a separate attack against each target, I'll clarify that as well. I can see making a case for a single attack roll against all targets, but given that you'll rarely be targeting more than two with a single attack it shouldn't be that bad.

It's heavily anime/mech influenced, Genos is a solid example of what one of these might be. I have a handful of new forms in the pipeline so thanks for the feedback and stay tuned.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
