The Day the Sky Shattered

A band of adventurers delves the depths of an ancient

crypt to find that which has been lost to

time, legend, and good sense.

The Day the Sky Shattered is a Tier I adventure created by Wildfire Works, a duo of independent creators. It provides enough experience to advance a party of level four adventurers to level five. This promotes them from Tier I (levels 1-4) to Tier II (levels 5-10,) where their choices typically have a larger impact on the world around them. This adventure aims to make that transition seamlessly. At first, they’ll enjoy an epic last-hurrah for the first tier of play. As events unfold, the party's choices grow substantially in consequence. By the end, they'll have had a taste of what it means to be "Heroes of the Realm."

Story overview

The story begins with the party approaching an ancient, Netherese crypt that has become the lair of a clan of unruly kobolds. Circumstances evolve quickly after their leader is discovered to be a crafty warlock. This patron of the kobolds installed them here to afford himself the opportunity to explore the crypt’s hitherto undiscovered secrets. In thwarting his scheme, the party themselves discover the secret corridors of the crypt and are left to delve them as they wish.

Within the depths of the ensorcelled catacomb, they’ll encounter a variety of challenges. They’ll have to avoid or disarm numerous traps, puzzle over the mechanisms that bar their way, battle a powerful -but comically inept- golem, translate a poem that can keep them safe, decide the fate of a disembodied necromancer, and run a deadly gauntlet.

Finally, they’ll decide the fate of a long-buried artifact that holds immense power. Will they unearth the artifact, therefore unleashing it upon Faerun? Or will they leave it buried in the interest of common sense? This and many more choices will determine the outcome of their adventure, an outcome that’s scrutinized by Elminster Amaur himself.

The Sage of Shadowdale appears at the end of the adventure as either a mysterious savior or an entertained observer. He deals out magical rewards and quirky wisdom according to the party’s choices during the adventure. His dialogue can be generated by a table that’s provided in the module, or it can be improvised by you!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
