F. A. Q.

1. Why is there a new "Grappling" skill?

We felt that grappling deserves its own skill because a character, as in real life, can be well trained and proficient in the art of grappling but not necessarily proficient with acrobatics or athletics. In martial arts there are principles used with techniques, such as leverage, momentum, and bone alignment that even a smaller person can still use strength as related to the technique even though they might not be able to bench press the body weight of their opponent. All in all, the new skill allows characters to add their proficiency bonus to grapple checks based on their grappling training even though they may not have chosen acrobatics or athletics.

2. Why aren't there techniques to fit "such and such" situation?

The Grappler's Handbook is designed to be an easy way to add flavor to encounters in D&D, and to inspire players to use their imaginations to create their own techniques and flare in their own game. One thing that martial artists hear all the time is "what do you do when they pull out a gun?" or some other situation that seems impossible; this kind of thing is true in real life as in role-playing. When you use a technique to disarm and restrain an opponent's arm, you might not have many great options and you just have to spin them around to attempt a throw into another enemy to create space. Or if you both end up on the ground and there are monsters all around with no allies to keep you safe while you try to choke them out, then don't worry about the choke!

3. Why is the Grappler's Handbook necessary?

It's not. All players of TTRPGs have their own things that they like, and if they like grappling and want more options, they can download the Grappler's Handbook, or they can use their own ideas that might be even cooler to play out in their games. Some players at the table might enjoy playing a spell caster and just saying the name of the spell they cast and what their roll was, while other players might describe the visual details of how their spell effect looks. That's the best part about D&D, you decide how you want to have fun with it.

4. What if I don't like how a rule works in the Grappler's Handbook?

If you want to add to, or take away from anything in the book then you can do that. As with anything in D&D, make it your own and have fun!

I really enjoyed this product. I was happy to be part of the playtest. Early on we were a bit concerned about the addition of the grappling skill, but it seems that this team did a great job with a smooth implementation. While I'm a fan of the far les [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
