Daerdan's Tall Tales: 101 Seafaring Encounters

Take to the seas and briny depths with this tome of 101 encounters!

"It all began after my second divorce; I had fled to the high seas as a deckhand, cartographer, and raconteur extraordinaire, so stay awhile—and tip well!" - Daerdan "the Yarnspinner"

Daerdan's Tall Tales: 101 Seafaring Encounters is the first in a series of encounters with a split amongst the Three Pillars of D&D: Combat, Exploration, and Social Interaction. This edition concerns the high seas and darkened depths and is perfect for your Ghosts of Saltmarsh campaign. Nothing in this supplement boils down to a mere random table. Every encounter comes detailed with loot, characters, motives, twists, and advice on how to better tie the event into your campaign. There are a hundred pages to this supplement utilizing magic items, concepts and monsters found across Volo's Guide to Monsters, Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes and other published media!

Within this supplement are:

  • Scaling Encounters and Tiers. Most encounters provide details on how to tailor these encounters to better fit your party's level. All four tiers of play are explored throughout the tome with more fearsome encounters (ala Release the Kraken! The Aerie Carrier, and Risen Ruins of the Corpse City).
  • Sample Storylines. You can form your own campaign's plot through a series themed encounters, such as Release the Kraken! The Cult of the Deep One, and Sekolah Lives! Each storyline comes with at least three encounters (ranging from Tier I-IV) which you can use as a framework for your own plot.
  • Frameworks. Several encounters also provide the framework to running a similar challenge, such as smuggling goods into port, designing a pirate crew, venturing to and fro the Plane of Water, weathering a storm at sea, and more.
  • Skill Challenges. Skill Challenges feature heavily in this tome, often as optional additions to an encounter. A relic from 4E, it's rules have been updated to 5th Edition. The adventurers will have to address issues with—gods forbid—their skills, not their swords.
  • Variants Galore. This tome holds even more than 101 encounters, for many provide detailed variants you can run, such as the The Ship of the Damned's five flavors of an undead crew: a vampire's pleasure barge, a lich's mobile lair, a merrenoloth sworn to ferrying the souls of sailors to the afterlife, and more!
  • New Monsters, New Items. Unleash untold tomfoolery with a pearl of wild magic or animate longswords with an amulet of bound sword; tackle the fearsome wereshark and snatch a pearl from a giant clam itchin' to dissolve you!
  • Allusions. Fans of mythology and other nautical stories and content will be delighted through encounters like Moby Dead, We All Float Down Here, Murmaider: Scourge of the Seas, and A Rock and a Hard Place.
  • Indexed. Every monster and item referenced in this supplement is indexed with its respective manual and page number for your convenience. Almost three hundred unique monsters are used throughout Tall Tales.

I must admit, I am often disappointed with these 100+ lists. But I have to say that I found this collection of encounters, fragments of full-blown storylines, skill challenges, tiered frameworks, and one-page dungeons, to be one of the most well thought out and well-written products I have purchased. The free version didn't do it justice. Plenty of great resources for a GM doing a sea campaign (like Saltmarsh or any other). I especially enjoyed the variety of monsters, characters, races, and gods that figure into this thoroughly enjoyable 100 pages. Krakens, sea-elf vikings, lost islands, seaside encounters, cults of Umberlee, Valkur, and Dagon; storms, winds, drunks, weresharks, and sea-based sorcerors who make sense. I highly recommend this product. It is worth every penny.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
