Defenders of the Wild: The Warden

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Darkness creeps across the world—a blight spawned by dark magic, foul monsters, and depraved villains. In these troubled times, the world depends on heroes to take a stand against the wicked who would plunge the world into ruin, to seek out festering evil and cleanse it from the lands. Some heroes who answer adventure's call take up arms, while others bring to bear their magical training, and joining them are the scoundrels, the holy warriors, and all the rest. Some, though, hear a different kind of calling, one that emanates from the world itself and compels them to protect the very earth on which they stand. These champions are the wardens—champions of the wild places, protectors of beasts, and wielders of dread primal power.

Defenders of the Wild: The Warden introduces a new class to the world's most popular roleplaying game. Drawing from an exciting archetype that dominated the battlefield in a previous edition of the game, the warden class arms characters with magical and martial prowess so that they can carry out their sacred duty and safeguards the lands from the despoilers. Tough and determined, wardens stand ready to protect their allies and their environment from the very worst enemies imaginable.

Can someone please clarify- this appears to be specifically for D&D 5e, NOT SotDL.

It's for 5e. It's a 4e class ported over.
"...world's most popular roleplaying game." is code for D&D because people can't say that for copyright reasons.

Why exactly did you recreate the ranger class?...

It appears to be more of a militarized druid than a ranger. It protects wild places, instead of protecting people from wild places.

Secondary Answer: The Ranger needs to be remade because it's not a good class. I haven't read this, but I welcome anyone taking a swing at it as WotC has stated they won't be moving forward with a redesign.

1) Militarized druid is basically what rangers ALWAYS were.
2) Ranger has been redone. The spell-less ranger is something WotC did in a UA. If you're into Homebrew content, clearly UAs are ok. See here: http://media.wizards.com/2015/downloads/dnd/UA3_ClassDesignVariants.pdf

4th Edition has predefined roles closer to MMO roles, like Tank, DPS, Controller, etc., and further defined by a power source, like Arcane, Primal, Martial, etc.

The author, who has written for D&D in past (like 99% certain), has been "converting" some of those classes to 5th edition (see his Warlord class too). The Warden in 4th edition was the "primal tank" whereas the Ranger was the "martial DPS," so while being similar, they didn't serve the same function.

I ultimately didn't like 4th edition, but I'm glad to see he's bringing some of those classes to 5th, and though technically a Homebrew, I trust the pedigree.

True, it has been redone in the UA articles, but development on that is closed per Jeremy Crawford and they will not be doing further development on that draft. 3PP has the option for further development and refining which we won't see with the UA ranger. Either way, neither of us have bought this product and can't speak clearly about what the class does/accomplishes.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
