Track down your enemies and put them to the blade with the Slayer, a full 20-level base class designed from the ground up. Play this class if you:

I'm running a campaign where vampires have subtly taken control of many of the powerful houses within the empire, and possibly the King himself is a vampire. I was looking to introduce an NPC group of slayers. This class gives me something really nice to work with, with the option of offering my players a chance to try the class as well. I will have to playtest it but it doesn't look broken nor weak as written. Will get back to you with more details soon!

I ran this class by a DM friend of mine, and we agreed on several key things:

1) Slayer's Focus needs a limit on how many times it can be used, probably a # of times equal to Intelligence modifier, because it feels like Hunter's Mark as an unlimited class ability, which is very strong.

2) Evasion is a Level 7 feature for Monks and Rogues, so it needs to be dropped to Level 7 accordingly.

3) All Level 7 subclass features need to be dropped down to Level 6.

4) Eyes of the Hunter is a strong feature, and needs to be bumped up to Level 11. Also, reduce the range of the magical darkvision to 60 ft, because 120 ft is a little strong.

5) The second part of Unwavering Focus is too powerful for its level. The stock Ranger gets that ability as a class feature at Level 18, so somewhere around that level would be appropriate for the ability.

Other than those things, very nice class, looking forward to seeing it when all the wrinkles are ironed...See more

Thank you so much for the feedback! Getting feedback at all is far too rare, let alone such carefully laid out thoughts. Since you took the time to do that for me, I'd like to take the time to give you a thorough response as well!

1) I can see how Slayer's Focus resembles Hunter's Mark, but an isolated comparison of the two is a red herring. Every martial class has some means of scaling up its damage as you level up (often spread across multiple abilities), so you have to look at the total typical output rather than just comparing individual abilities. After all, Sneak Attack is far more powerful than Extra Attack, but it's not broken because the classes with Extra Attack have various other boosts (Fighting Style, Improved Divine Smite, Horde Breaker, Superiority Dice, etc). A lot of the Slayer's damage scaling is concentrated into Slayer's Focus; if it had limited uses, the class as a whole wouldn't be able to keep up with other classes.

HI, I got this one a few days ago and this is awesome! Finally, a class other than Wizard that relies on its' Intelligence! I was wondering about a few things and this helps clarify some of them, but I do still have some things that seem like they might need work and possible means of working around it.

(1) I've been running it through my head on different ways to make the Slayer's Focus damage feature work in a manner that won't make people think it's a spamable hunter's mark. Perhaps you could make it so that once per turn, the first hit you land on the target of your Slayer's Focus takes additional damage equal to your Intelligence modifier + half your Slayer level. It still scales up over time for an extra guaranteed 15 points of damage at level 20 on your 1st attack. The damage still scales up, and it seems feasible enough so that people won't think it's overpowered.

Glad you like it! I'm happy to address your thoughts:

A1) It's possible some people might feel better about Slayer's Focus with a change like that, but it's equally possible that a similar number of people would have a negative knee-jerk reaction to the revised version, resulting in little to no net gain in perception. Ultimately, I'm more interested in making something that plays well at the table than something that looks safe to all readers. After all, I create for love of the craft. :)

A2) In general, one of 5E's design principles is consistency: the system generally avoids having two abilities that are basically the same with one small difference. With Devil's Sight having also been copied elsewhere (such as the Shadow Sorcerer), it seems important to keep the ability identical rather than near-identical until such time as gameplay experience reveals a material need to change it. (If you encounter such gameplay experience, please let me know!)

Noted. I guess one of the reasons it may be getting jumped on so much is because it's just different than what everyone's used to. It's just a minor learning curve I suppose. It'll adapt overtime and just become natural as I learn to play the class. I know that if I have someone that wants to play ranger in any of my future campaigns, Imma hand this to the 1st so they can really dig into the vibe that Ranger hypes itself up to be.

Thanks for giving me your clarifications and reasonings behind all your choices, now I feel like I understand everything a bit better.

And one more thank you for getting back to me so quickly. Shows you really keep a close eye on your work and the feedback you get for it.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
