The Haunting at Heather House

The Haunting at Heather House

Heather House sits on a hill, rafters heavy with memory. Gloom perches on the mantle, and ravens crowd the balconies. Paint peels from warped panels, and the crowlike door knocker is coated in verdigris. No-one walks the path to Heather House. It stands alone, for alone it must remain.

Will you enter, and put an end to the nightmares?
Will you enter, and unravel its secrets?
Will you enter, and never return?
What haunts the halls at Heather House?
Come inside, and see.

The Haunting at Heather House is a Ravenloft adventure of psychological horror and mystery for characters of 3rd level. Grounded heavily in the gloomy ambience of the Shadowfell, this adventure explores themes of memory and loss. Be warned. Heather House is not for the faint of heart, or the weak of will - the darkness under the rafters has claimed many lives, and only a combination of skill, luck and guile will allow trespassers to survive.
You want this adventure if you love:

  • Atmosphere. Heather House is an evocative module, relatively sparse in combat opportunities. It relies on building up tension, using mechanics provided within to unleash unnerving Hauntings when suspense reaches its natural zenith
  • The Unknown. Heather House provides more questions than it does answers, and the answers always lead to more questions
  • Character Development. In many places, Heather House leans on the bonds, flaws and personality traits of characters to encourage dynamic interactions inside the party as the House threatens to tear them apart from the inside out
  • Unfortunate Ends. Heather House is (in several places) a deadly threat. It is possible that (by the mercy of the Dark Powers) characters who make poor choices may never again see the light of day

As in all my work, The Haunting at Heather House contains references, easter eggs and answers to riddles found in my other adventures. Be careful what you wish for, however. Some answers are worse than living with the question. You can find me for questions or comments on my Twitter - @deathbybadger.

Where are the image files? In the PDF there are no maps and I need them to play online (VTT). :/

I licensed the map art for commercial use in the pdf from an artist called Gabriel Pickard. I didn't license them for sale separately, which is why I haven't promised VTT maps in the listing. However, Gabriel is a great cartographer who is worth supporting, and you can actually find his portfolio (including VTT ready maps for this module) on the Roll20 marketplace - I believe this one is called "Murder Mansion" -

I hope that helps a little.

If I had know I would not have bought the adventure. A map pack with 62 items that I do not need by $4,99... great!

Dear Svein,

I'm afraid those are the terms of my license with the artist - I didn't license them for sale separately, which is why I haven't promised VTT maps in the listing. I believe in supporting artists and paying them fairly for their work, and paying for an exclusive commercial license would have made the module not cost-effective to produce at all, so it would likely never have been made. I'll consider your thoughts, though in future it would save you disappointment to ask the creator ahead of time (such as by using the Comments section) if VTT maps are included if there are none listed - one should always assume there aren't any unless otherwise specified.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
