Welcome to Keeping It Classy: The Barbarian

(also available for Fantasy Grounds here)

This book aims to give you a host of new options for the Barbarian class, to liven up your game.

This includes the following:

  • 15 new Barbarian Paths
  • 5 new backgrounds (usable by everyone, but thematically appropriate for Barbarians)
  • 1 new race (the redscale lizardfolk - a semi-civilized breed of lizardfolk, that were created to be strong and loyal)
  • 6 new pieces of equipment (5 weapons: bolas, one and two-handed claymores, lochaber axe, molamu, recurve bow, and wardarts - as well as war paint).

I feel like these all need more time in the oven.
The asking price is very high for the current version.

I really do like the flavors at play here, but I really think a ground-up rework is needed.

Barbarians don't need any more sources of advantage. They also don't need any more damage reduction.

Skin-changer is strictly much, much too powerful.

One of them gives a strictly better version of bear totem at 3rd (advantage against spells AND resistance to their damage.. at 3rd?) That sub's 6th level is already contained in the 3rd level ability.

Things to avoid in future versions: crit immunity, blanket magic immunity, piling on tons of extra damage (even using your proficiency instead of damage is a blanket 30%increase in damage bonus.

One of them gives 29 str. That's absurd and flat out better than any other class ability in the game, AND when acquired is better than the barbarian capstone (or do they stack?!) At 20th level...See more

Well done. I really enjoyed reading through this book.

One balance thing jumped out at me: the Path of Madman, while not getting spellcasting via the path, explicitly allows spellcasting while raging. Maybe you considered this and it's intentional, but I feel like that's inviting a 3-level dip in this class for caster multiclassers. Was this intended? Would you mind talking a bit about your design goals with this class?

Again, thanks for making an awesome book!

Hi Chris,

That was entirely intentional. :)

When I designed the book in general, I thought about the "tropes and archetypes" of the barbarian, like Conan and so on. But I also started delving into the ones that might be represented elsewhere. There were 2 that stood out: Hulk/Bruce Banner and Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde.
Now Hulk could more accurately be represented through Path of the Skinchanger, but the more I thought about Dr. Jekyll the more I realized that his counterpart Mr. Hyde was a barbarian, but not one that lost total control. The same goes for a few other pieces of fiction with the "mad scientist".
My line of thinking, therefore, was that a spellcaster, of a similar ilk to Dr. Jekyll, should retain some of his faculties - ergo the spellcasting stayed. :)

I LOVED all of the detail you put into this, barbarian is my main go to for melee damage dealer. But I usually play tanks, I will definitely make one a traveling npc or fellow adventuring party in my campaign!

I'm glad to hear it. :)

If you like playing tanks though, perhaps you should take a look at the Path of the Immortal. :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
