The Pirate Class 5e

The Pirate!

“To err is human… but to arr is pirate!”

Take to the high seas in style with this dungeon and dragons 5th edition custom class by Campaign & Craft. Whether your plundering port town or treasure fleet, searching for loot or lost mysteries, this class will surely help you find your sea legs.

What better way to prepare yourself for the upcoming 'Ghosts of Saltmarsh' release than to dive right into a nautical themed character class.

The Pirate class is primarily a firearm-oriented class with a heavy focus on fun and maneuver based combat. Additionally, the Pirate class also has four amazing sub-classes that help highlight certain nautical stereotypes and strengthen the pirate’s base features and abilities. The large selection of maneuvers and sub-classes this document has to offer really helps to diversify the class, allowing you to play your character in line with any nautical niche you wish to.

The following is a list of sub-classes available in this document:

The Fool:

“It’s a fool’s errand!” Not just a turn of phrase, rather a call to action! The fool is a daring duellist whose gambles always seem to pay off. The fool can be a devious trickster, whose every trip and tumble a clever façade to hide their true intentions. Or perhaps, they are simply a dim-witted dunce, whose every success the result of blind luck.

The Dread Pirate:

“I’ll fatten every shark I find, whether it be with mutineers, captured crew, or cowards!” The fiercest of all fabled pirates, sailors dare not speak their names or risk summoning them out of fog or yonder horizon. The Dread Pirate strikes fear into the hearts of his enemies, through both his actions and words, both of which can turn any seasoned sailor into a blubbering mess, or bloated corpse.

The Seafallen:

“Do you fear death? You should…” The Seafallen pirate is a pitiful breed of sailor, one who has lost their life at sea and sought to extend their miserable existence by striking a deal with some patron of the deep. These pirates are often referred to as a ‘salt-risen’ or ‘hanged man,’ they are universally feared, as many believe their ilk brings nought but death and despair.

The Powder Keg:

“The bigger the boom, the sharper the whistle, and wider the smile!” The Powder Keg is an artist, one who paints with fire, smoke and ash. This sort of pirate takes great pride in their explosives; can always be found tinkering away, trying to create even more destructive devices, treacherous tools and weapons of woe.

Also Featured:

An Optional Race:

“You best start believing in ghost stories… You’re in one!” The Seafallen are part of an undead race of nautical nightmare. These sailors, whether they see themselves as blessed or cursed to rise again, are the result of a pact with a powerful patron of the depths. These damned beings do not age, nor do they draw breath, they simply exist to serve, at the whim of their patron, whoever that may be.

25 Magic / Masterwork Items:

“Raise the black! There be plunder on the horizon!” This document features an assortment of magic and masterwork items that the Dungeon Master can use to spice up their games, reward players and aid in roleplay throughout your adventures. Whether your players have just completed a treasure hunt, sunk a ship and plundered its cargo, or defeated a legendary nautical monstrosity. Whatever the case, these magical items will surely entertain and enliven your game.

Tips and Tables:

To further aid in roleplaying throughout your adventures, this document has been laced with a wide range of tables, notes and descriptive passages. These segments help both the player formulate a fun character concept to play, and also aid the Dungeon Master in making sure that the character a person wishes to play will not clash with, overshadow or be diminished by others at the table.

Update Log:

Fixed a couple of spelling errors highlighted by a purchaser. Additionally, used a lower compression rate for the pdf exportation to remove as much pixelation on the background images and artwork. This means the file size is slightly larger, however the document looks far more crisp and professional as a result.

Quick Question - can you please explain the purpose of the Dumb Luck Maneuver? I cannot think of a single reason you would ever want something else to have a BETTER chance of hitting you.

You can expend a second swagger point to have them re-roll normally without the +5 or advantage. I didn't want a forced re-roll ability to be so cheap and so early on without an extra swagger point cost.

AESTHETICS:
This looks pretty and professional; I wasn’t expecting the document to be anything more than a white background and a slab of text like some other class documents I’ve purchased from the DM’s guild. To my surprise, the document is full of artwork, a background theme, and cool colorized notes / tables.
MAIN CLASS:
When I first read the class, I was super worried it was going to be an overpowered jumble of rogue and fighter abilities. However, upon reading it in full, and playtesting it, I realized the class is far more maneuver based, almost as if you are playing a sort of martial wizard, with a magic wand that is actually a gun… These maneuvers all have differing effects and require you to spend swagger points to trigger them. This means you must think and play tactically, using varying maneuvers in different ways, whilst always being aware of how many swagger points you are spending. This is far more fun than simply walking to a point on the battlefield...See more

Absolutely top tier class sheet -- for less than a big-name cup of coffee!

With this document, you get wide selection of cleverly constructed subclasses, mechanics, weapons and magic items. Oh, and a custom race.
I think the graphical work is pleasing and fits the pirate theme, while maintaining it's aesthetic style throughout the document.
Contents are organized in an intuitive way, making it easy to maneuver and retrieve whatever information you need.

I played a powder keg pirate kobold, calling himself Cap'n Brick Brack. There was never a problem that couldn't be solved with gunpowder and steel. Hostile NPCs? Explosives. Arrested and stuck in a cell? Explosives. Slow negotiations? You get the idea. At some point he "legally" acquired a pirate ship, and crewed it with 30 kobolds. At a later point in time he stole an airship.
There was never a point in our custom campaign where the class didn't fit in, or seemed imbalanced in any way.

Celebrate...See more

As one of the playtesters, I was given a review copy and I must say that it is one of the most comprehensive addition to the standard 5E classes

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
