Third Time's the Charm

Those who organically regenerate, afflict metal and the lungs, and are reborn from death are mighty yet small. Others flit about, felt but unseen. Greater mysteries than these lie within the Veil, near to the land of Faerie, clinging to the magic of forgotten times. True travelers know that stories are best believed when lived, and those who best believe, live.

— Rai’tyl, twenty-second Head Keeper of the Veil

Questing through the forest, you will be tested. Which side will you take between a wizard and the Keepers of the Veil? Will you be able to find the materials necessary to help cure your friend of the ancient evil that assails him? And when it comes down to it, what are you willing to sacrifice for your beliefs?

Third Time’s the Charm picks up where Second Glance left off and invites the PC to find a wizard who can help heal the Crystalline Curse slowly paralyzing the PC’s friend and protector. As the party grows closer on this adventure, learning to depend on one another, they must also navigate the Veiled Wood’s changing landscape, deciding who they can trust and who they will help as much lies in the balance.

Though this was written as the third installment in the Crystalline Curse Trilogy, this adventure can be inserted into any campaign setting and scaled accordingly. Third Time’s the Charm is part of our mission to bring you high-quality, ready-to-play material that supports adventuring parties of 1 Player and 1 DM.

This adventure is written for a third-level character in a one-on-one 5th edition D&D campaign.

Everything you need for your own two-person game is inside!

This product includes:

  • A 3rd or 4th-level adventure adaptable to any setting

  • Stat blocks for one new creature and two NPCs

  • A region map, two sitemaps, and a hand-drawn dungeon map to aid the PC’s investigations

  • A fully realized forest region with fleshed-out NPCs and places to explore

  • Detailed backstory for the ancient warrior sheltered inside the PC’s treasured amulet

  • Four custom magical items

  • And helpful tips for DMing a one-on-one game

This adventure is perfect for those looking to begin or continue their duet campaign.

Be on the lookout for more from D&D Duet, part of Grove Guardian Press.

We’d love for you to check out the first adventure in this narrative arc, First Blush, and see where the story began. Then, you can make your way to the town of Duskhollow for the second installment in the series, Second Glance.

We also created a light-hearted Sune’s Day adventure, Cupid’s Sparrow, for parties of any size who want to attend a festival and uncover the source of a few amusing mishaps.

This was awesome! Being a long-time player of D&D but a very fledgling DM and my player being new to TTRPGs altogether, we thought that this trilogy was a wonderful adventure and an excellent springboard into future adventures and shenanigans ^^ Something I thought you may get a kick out of is that now they're trying to romance Garren... xD

Ooh that is so exciting to hear! I love that you and your player enjoyed the trilogy so much and we are ALL FOR romancing the NPCs, Garren especially! The same thing happened at our home gaming table in the campaign the trilogy was based on!

I thought this was a fine rendition of MotPP: https://youtu.be/p9FqHxsUP24 (episodes 16,17). It looks like it’s been ported to some VTT… I did not recognize it.

I think this would make a fantastic product for the Fantasy Grounds Virtual Tabletop. If you search my name (Rob Twohy) here on DMs Guild you can see we've done this over 400 times. We offer this service at NO COST. It will be more exposure for your product and a new audience as well. Feel free to contact me in Facebook Messenger (http://m.me/rob.twohy.7) and I will explain how it all works.

ThanX for your consideration.

Hi Beth and Jonathan,

I'm running '3rd Time' now with my son and I have a couple of questions:

Stellarin's tower - any suggestions for what the inside might be like? I've had Stellarin offer to let the PC and sidekick spend the night there, but then realized I have no map or description of it in case they decide to snoop around.

Fee-Ree - her description says she's a wild magic sorcerer, but then it says to use the Priest stat block. Why not a mage or some other arcane spell caster?

Thanks for the great trilogy!

Hi Victor,
For Stellarin's tower, I think the classic overspilling library with scattered spell scrolls and a room of botanical "experiments" would make for a fun search!

And you are more than welcome to use a mage stat block instead of the priest! Our primary consideration there was the disparity in CR—a priest is CR 2 and a mage CR 6. We didn't want a cone of cold or fireball to one-shot the PC and sidekick, and the priest has several helpful spell options for if the party befriends Fee-Ree.

We're so glad you've enjoyed the trilogy! I hope Third Time's goes well for you and your son!

Hi! Me and my girlfriend loved the trilogy, and we are sparking our own campaign with our friends group using her lvl 3(now lvl 4 cleric) for use in that campaign and tying her back ground in.
"spoilers"

If she was teleported to the cloud mountains and woke up in the snake wood for the druid adventure around Duskwood, where would their overlying kingdom be at? Looking at the map the city of Eshpurta might be better for this third story. But do you have any suggestions on where the PC background kingdom should be? Thanks! love yalls work!

Hi Paul,
I'm so happy to hear that you both enjoyed the adventures! You've just made my day! And I love the idea of using a duet game to establish a character and their backstory before joining a group game!

We had imagined Amn as the PC's original nation since it's led by five noble families who bicker amongst themselves and wield great amounts of power and wealth. Doing a bit of reading up on your question, I think Athkatla could be a really cool origin city for the PC as the capital of Amn.

Please let me know if I'm misunderstanding, but I agree, Eshpurta is a great proximity city for the third adventure. Since it's at Amn's borders, it adds tension for the PC to choose between returning to Amn or venturing out on their own across Faerun, and it gives you somewhere to go to meet up with an adventuring party!

I hope that helps, and please let me know if we can clarify further!

That is what im hoping for, I am establishing her a nemesis based on her interaction that she had with the saytr. She pulled a ding dong ditch on him and came to some heavy cursed words from both. So the expansion of the forgotten realms into this makes it nice! thanks for the holler back i really appreciate the help!

A satyr nemesis sounds amazing!

Maybe Silverymoon for a high elven city? It's super interesting!

This is the most well put-together adventure in the trilogy. I made sure to buy it again, I hope most of that money went to you.
My question is about Stellarin. One section says "The unique quality of this special place ... was one of the primary reasons for Stellarin setting his tower here.", while another says he "teleported his tower into the middle of the Veil quite by accident". How do these go together?

Hi Reese,
We're so happy to hear that you're enjoying Third Time's the Charm! Thank you for letting us know, and thank you for your generosity!

Now, to answer your question: you're absolutely correct about those two things being at odds! The second was how we originally conceptualized Stellarin, and we must have missed that in our revisions. The first one is the correct version, unless you really like the second. He's very deliberate, and this spot provided a lot of promise to him. When we revise the title again, we'll be sure that gets cleared up! Our apologies!

You've probably already revised it by now but perhaps he chose a beautiful glade on the edge of the Veil only to have the Veil choose differently... and put his tower somewhere in the middle!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
