Oathbreakers: Options for Fallen Paladins (5e)

To fall is merely to rise again.

A Paladin's oath is sacred, and to go against that oath creates a void which must be filled by something. The Oathbreaker still amasses power, but twisted by his betrayal of his Oath. He is powerful, but at a cost, and there is more than one way to fall...

Included in this document are FIVE new Paladin subclasses, each one representing an alternate path a Paladin might take after betraying their oath and falling from grace. Paladins need not necessarily fall to evil, either! A Paladin might stray from Evil, or from Law, or from Chaos, or from any axis on the alignment chart. The subclasses included here are:

  • The Savage Oathbreaker: With a focus on sheer violence and cruelty. They are excellent at killing, but have a chance to target their allies...
  • The Atoning Oathbreaker: For Evil Paladins who wish to make up for their pasts. They seek to understand their enemies, but may have problems hurting those they understand...
  • The Iconoclast Oathbreaker: When the Lawful break their oaths, they will then strive to break all oaths and all things.
  • The Peaceful Oathbreaker: For Paladins who reject violence - even justified violence. They have lost the use of their Divine Smite, instead transforming it into a healing tool of peace...
  • The Broken Oathbreaker: A sad Paladin who became a shell of their former self. Their crushed soul has cut them off from their spellcasting, but they can dampen the spells of others as well.

Each of these subclasses is a double-edged sword - it's not a punishment if it's a straight upgrade, after all. DMs may use these subclasses to personalize your Paladin's fall based on their behavior, instead of using the Oathbreaker in the DMG as a one-size-fits-all Fallen Paladin. Players, with DM permission, may take these classes if they would like to play a more conflicted Paladin.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
