Castle Amber - An Expansion and 5e Conversion Guide to Dungeon Module X2

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Castle Amber was originally published in 1981 as Dungeon Module X2 for the Dungeons and Dragons Expert Set. Written by Tom Moldvay, it is widely regarded as one of the greatest D&D modules ever written... and it is certainly one of the most bizarre of the classic adventures. The original adventure was designed for 6-10 characters of levels 3 to 6. It was, however, an exceedingly lethal adventure. I have converted this module for use with 5e characters between level 6 and 10, including multiple difficulty options for each combat encounter. The result is well over 100 pages of content including stat blocks for over 40 monsters (often with multiple variations), over 25 detailed NPCs, and over 30 magic items.

This adventure is easily used with any setting that allows for strange magic and interplanar travel, but I have added specific adaptations to allow it to fit within the Eberron campaign setting. I have included a few notes on how it could be used with Ravenloft as well.

Please note that the original adventure is required to use this conversion.

Content:

  • Conversion notes, making all encounters compatible with 5th edition rules;
  • Mechanics that preserve the bizarre flavor of the original adventure but have modern sensibilities (for example, substitutions have been found for arbitrary instant death effects);
  • Each encounter has multiple options for challenge ratings;
  • Expanded backgrounds, personalities, and relationships of NPCs as well as an enhanced narrative that ties together some of the arbitrary-seeming encounters in the Castle and its dungeon;
  • Optional explanations for the curse that surrounds Castle Amber and the strangeness of its inhabitants;
  • Literary background information on the Clark Ashton Smith short stories set in Averoigne that the original adventure borrowed from;
  • Appendix A includes 43 pages of monster stat blocks, including aranea, brain collectors, bone golems, and dozens more;
  • Appendix B includes stat blocks for all NPCs in the text of the adventure (over 25 pages worth), including Stephen Amber and characters from the stories that inspired this adventure;
  • Appendix C includes some new spells, a new Warlock Patron designed for Eberron (the necromantically-themed Mabar, The Endless Night) and a new Wizard Arcane Tradition focused on mad experimentation;
  • Appendix D includes over 30 new magic items, including sentient weapons and a new Figurine of Wondrous Power; and
  • Convenient cross-linking: Each monster, NPC, and magic item stat block in the appendices is tied to the encounters where it appears via bookmark links.

There are a lot of '5e conversions' up on DMsGuild but in my experience this one is by far both the most useful and the most complete. The original Castle Amber was an amazing module that really managed to seed the imagination of the D [...]

Excellent, in-depth conversion. I had a few issues with the tweaks to the original narrative, some of which fell a bit flat. You can't cure Castle Amber of its weirdness and internal inconsistencies! But overall a wonderfully useful expansion. Wai [...]

Very solid and thoughtfull work, a very loyal yet considerate transformation to a new edition of an all time great adventure. The original had distinctive trademarks and in some parts very brief descriptions and had its own disturbing features, not unl [...]

Good straightforward conversion of Castle Amber to 5e. Requires the original module to run. Statblocks are well balanced, even including lesser and greater options for scaling emcounters. The Mabar, The Endless Night warlock and mad wizard subclasses [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
