Toecap's Puzzle House

ADD TO WISHLIST >

New Remastered Version with a cleaned-up PDF, DungeonDraft maps, and art by PastelVui

Toecap's Puzzle House is an Escape Room style dungeon for a party of four 1st level characters, with options for higher levels, and can also work as an introductory adventure to Dungeons and Dragons for new players, although Dungeon Masters should be more familiar with the system. It should take around 2 hours to play.

If players use their wits and skills, they should be able to make it in and out of the magical Puzzle House with the treasure and their lives.

This is Part 1 of The Toecap Trilogy. The second part, The Investigation of Toecap's Tragedy, is now available.

Is it just my players or does the word Stralk not mean anything to anyone. Specially with the clue in the mirror, nobody thought to look at plants. Is the word supposed to be Stalk without the 'R' ? I ran this at a convention for new players 5 times and it was the only puzzle that they had real difficulty with, and I had to kind of drop lots of hints.

It's a combination of Straw and Stalk, I put them together to make it sound like more of a name and not make the hint super obvious, but I can see how that could trip up some people. Maybe I should have put some straw in there to help catch their attention, like a straw hat in the closet with flowers in it. Hopefully everyone had a good time otherwise, I'd love to hear how people responded to it at a convention.

Ahh ok, that makes more sense. I can use that when I've some players spinning their wheels. I've had a few really dig into the Leather Book handout and realize that Stralk wasn't in there, and then pickup that Toecap probably named her kids after things in her profession, but be confused after finding the Stralk nameplate first. Thanks for the reply.

Heya,
I had read and purchased this a while back loving the story but not having the right place to run it, the other week I needed an emergency back up idea for my session and ran this. It was fantastic, my players loved it, loved the puzzles, loved the mystery and story behind it. It was very easy to run off the back of very little prep (other than having read through it quickly before).

I also created some quick maps (I love map making!) that I would be happy to give to you to add if you like them, or for other players to use. They should be free to use under creative comms license, I made them in Inkarnate. No pressure but if ya'll like please feel free to use! Sorry they're a bit rushed (I only had that one day to put them together haha. Free to edit and change via inkarnate!)

I'm so glad to hear you all enjoyed the adventure! I have been meaning to make some proper maps when I get around to cleaning up the formatting and stuff, but I am glad to see your maps, they do help make things clearer!

In area 4 the Dining Room, it says there is a name plate stuck in the flower arrangement but it is a portrait. The mistakes just made it a bit hard to follow the clues when I was prepping. Also, and this is going to sound dumb, but I didn't know how to get my players upstairs. The map made me think that the stairs were for the basement because the secret door lines up with them. To make it SUPER obvious the map could have a label with an arrow or the module could have a section saying 'To the left of the music room are stairs that head up to the second story of the house.' I really understand that this is obvious and once it clicked for me I felt silly. However at the table we were all confused. It would also be cool to have a quick table for the DM that shows where each of the items are at one glance. It took me a couple of reads to work out how the puzzles needed to be solved and where the items were. These are TINY things and I'm only taking the time to write them here because the module ROCKS. It was so much...See more

Hi Kirrily, thanks for the feedback! I can def understand how that mistake would make it confusing, and you're right, having it say "There are stairs behind the piano" would be clearer. I do have the stairs widen out as they go up, but always better to have more signs pointing things out than less. So I've updated the PDF to fix all that. I've also added a version of the map with icons for the portraits and nameplates, because you're right, it never hurts to have a quick ref either. I'm glad you all had fun with the adventure, and I hope your players do eventually figure it out, they might be interested in doing the rest of the Toecap Trilogy then! That's not to mention the other modules I've got, including the ones coming up, so there's plenty to look forward to! Do you have the actual city mapped out yet? I would like to use this city as a base of operation for my friends that play... I lost all the other cities plus they were getting old for my party LOL

I have it largely mapped out, which you can find in the follow up to this adventure, The Investigation of Toecap's Tragedy. My current goal is to elaborate on specific areas in the city with future modules, but Investigation has some pages describing the various areas. If you want a say in what parts I focus on, you can always support my Patreon, Forester Designs, but no pressure.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
