The Malady Codex: Mindflayer Danger

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This supplement is written by medical students with a love for tabletop roleplaying games. Inspired by the vast array of diseases, and the medieval myths that once surrounded them, we embarked on a mission; to enrich other worlds with fantastical diseases.

Deep in each civilization’s roots, there are myths, remedies, and folklore, all revolving around the ailments that affect its people. When each Dungeon Master wants to expand on the details of the societies that unfold before their very eyes, tools that spice up the process become a vital weapon. This supplement will hopefully become one of them, as DMs become inspired by the grim, epic or mundane conditions of the human body and mind.

In this preview installment of Acesius' writings , we dwelve deep into two alien diseases, brought down on us by Illithids! Due to their entirely different nature, Mindflayers and Elder Brains can create diseases that mortals have no way of defending against, which makes them even more horrifying.

Do not underestimate diseases. Part of the Dungeon Master’s art is to be able to stir feelings up in their players, and few human conditions could accomplish that better. Used as a way to advance a storyline, to expand a character arc or to create conflict, the following stories can serve you well!

In this preview book, you'll find content from both Malady Codexes, such as:

  • The Mindflayer Network, an illithid virus that connects its victims senses to an elder brain, leaking information and slowly driving them insane!
  • The Fugue State, a parasitic infection of the brain that forces mortals to run off and offer themselves as sacrifices to the Mindflayer Dragon known as Brainstealer!
  • Details on the origins, symptoms, and cures for all these maladies.
  • Tips on how to implement each one in your games, making your life just a bit easier.
  • The stat blocks for Brainstealer himself, a CR 18 monster with quite a few powerful abilities!
  • A useful table to consult when deciding what specific spells affect what disease.

Give your worlds a touch of fantastical realism and watch as your players dive deep into the stories you create with these tools!

Illithds in intimate momments with some humanoids because why not:

Yeah, the first bit was enchanting, but then you used air polution as a cheap shot excuse to blame Demonic Virulence on.

WTH?? Lazy, Lame, Lethargic, Leprosy! Leprosy would be a good analogy! Air Polution?? B___ please. You should have seen the air in cities 40 year ago, green, tasting of burnt diesel, and filled with lead.

You're clueless and I certainly won't be rewarding your laziness with my hard cash.

I recently bought this one but when reading it I saw it only has 9 pages in the PDF and the numbers on the bottom of the pages imply there should be a lot more stuff listed.

As we note in the description, this is a preview product of the first two Malady Codex books. It provides samples of some Mindlfayer diseases, as a small taste of the rest of the diseases in our books, which you can find in this site.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
