The Grand Library

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Grand Library aims to help DMs make their libraries and bookstores feel more dynamic and alive by providing them with over 130 generic books that can fit into any location or setting.

Each book comes with a description of the book's appearance and contents as well as a short extract.

Some of the books also come with hidden effects. From advantage on a check to short-term madness, you never know what will happen when you peak into a random tome.

This book now comes with a printable version as well as a deck of printer-friendly flashcards so your players can hold on to the books they find as well as allowing them to search by picking one up at random!

Love this and use it often. Any chance for form fillable book cards to fill with our own books if we need to add some for particular players?

This is a remarkable resource for filling libraries and shops with random books; the only thing it is missing is a decent set of randomization tables (Something like 1-75 Common, 76-98 rare, 99-00 Legendary, and then sub-tables per type). It's not terribly feasible to roll 1-135 without using software, and since all the books are equally weighted to appear, Legendary books with spells are just as likely to appear as children's storybooks. Proper random distribution seems to be left as an exercise to the reader.

This is a great resource. I love to have my characters find books as they explore, with some of them holding interesting lore about the adventure setting, background information for upcoming quests, or items that might be found in the campaign. But I also always need other books, and my players always want to know what every book is about and to read some of it. I would highly recommend this resource to other DM's.

Hi there, great job with this. Any chance of including a print-friendly version? Just something exactly the same but without the background would be really helpful. Thanks!

I've briefly read through and I love it! This has wonderful flavor text to enrich any campaign! One suggestion though for the music and song books. It would be helpful if the lyrics were written as verses.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
