Prestige Path Primer

Prestige Paths are a way to add another layer of flavor onto a character without using class levels. They are somewhere between a class and a background. Class levels are finite in 5e, so this allows for a light version of a class without breaking normal progression.

This is a primer containing some rule clarifications for using Prestige Paths. It also contains a sample Prestige Path, the Knight of the Chalice.

Feel free to leave any questions you have in the comments section.

This is Version 2.2 of the Primer. The Knight of the Chalice has been updated to the v2 Prestige Path format. It reduces the ranks to 4, adds a new way to earn them, more frontloads the path, and scales the damage of the abilities to character level.

v2.2: Removed "Buying Ranks with XP" and added "Buying Features with Downtime & Gold". Replaced references of “Rank” with “Tier”.

Blessing of the Chalice is a tier 4 prayer, which means if becomes available at lvl. 11. Why does it describe the damage and damage increases for tiers/lvls below? Seems redundant.
Otherwise, interesting concept, and I'll follow your Prestige Path work more closely :)h

At the time, it was in case a GM wanted to ignore the level restrictions and grant higher Tiers at lower levels. I think I moved away from that in a recent version and will fix it in the next update.

Excellent. I'm interested in the bundle and was wondering when you'll update the remaining existing PPs to v2?

Also, I'm assuming that any of the converted powers in your 4e conversions would be suitable in power level to the ones in the PPs?

Also, please be aware that the preview is still version 1, which confused me quite a bit in the beginning.

I'm updating the old Prestige Paths as people request them, actually.

As for the converted 4e powers, yes, they are similar in power, but the new version of PPs starts at level 5, so a Tier 1 power from a prestige path is equal to a Rank 2 converted power. They scale up at the same rate from there.

You should probably fix the points in the example path that still refer to rank 5

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
