D&D Solo Adventure: The Tortured Land

ADD TO WISHLIST >

5e Solo Gamebooks presents The Tortured Land, the fourth in our series of solo adventures set in the Forgotten Realms. With this adventure, we take off the gloves and throw your PC into the thick of some serious danger in the frigid north of Faerun. Only the most hardened adventurers will make it through this adventure in one piece, and with several different paths available, replayability is assured. The Tortured Land will provide you with hours of enjoyable, challenging play time.

Arriving in a lonely village in the middle of the northern plain known as The Ride, your hero is soon drawn into a quest to retrieve a precious artifact. From there they will journey even further north, towards the barren waste known as the Tortured Land, in search of an unknown enemy. There are items to collect, codewords to activate and perils to avoid. And of course, many combat encounters! As always, hyperlinks are included in the text to facilitate easy navigation, removing the need for scrolling between entries.

Another impressive addition to 5e Solo Gamebooks’ list of adventures. A challenge for solo players and, with conversion tables, easily scalable to fit parties as well.

John Todsen

Paul Bimler’s latest adventure stretches across frozen tundra, difficult mountain passes, and deadly ice-covered peaks. It’s jam-packed with deadly and creative encounters that will both intrigue new players and Grognards alike. Drawing upon a diverse cast of creatures and scalable combat encounters, Bimler paints a truly heroic adventure. Too many people let real adventure pass them by because they’re too busy or unwilling to take that leap. Don’t make that same mistake! Pick up this adventure now, you will thank yourself later.

David La Boon

The writing is sharp, the presentation is clean, and the instructions on how to play the monsters are very clear and easy to follow.

Luke Monroe, author of Halaster's Hoard and Lost Tomes.

New to this adventure is a detailed Multi PC Conversion Table, for those players who like to solo with more than 1 PC. It converts every encounter for 2, 3 or 4 PCs, a more thoughtful method than the blanket rule provided in previous adventures. Now multiple players can journey without a DM, secure in the knowledge that each encounter is balanced as the author intended, no matter the number of PCs.

With deadly ice monsters and numerous traps and landscape hazards, you will need all your wits about you to get through this solo adventure! At the end of this adventure, you will progress your PC to level 5, in preparation for our next solo adventure, Drums at Daggerford.

First three are really solid, and I still really want a physical print of those other two adventure books, but big oofs with this ones map booklet, it's not even printable.

Hi, I just discovered this books the last week and I'm rushing towards them. They help imagining the PC's attitude with the choices (and I get to play them as I wait for the campaign he was designed for to start).
However, I must also express some issues I have:
Aside of the fact that I don't feel like we are given much opportunity to spend money (is you play these as intended, chances are that, like me, you are carrying ~2000 gp in the sack), the only big spending opportunity was in "The Tyrant of Zhenvil Keep". Now, maybe this is the point, as we are heading afar from civilization.

So far I was taken aback by the text on 230, mainly the "[they] do not speak your language". I obviously don't expect a choice to be given saying "If you speak X regional language go to Y", but 'Comprehend Languages' is a 1-st level spell and, in "Tyrant of Zhenvil Keep" we were given the chance to buy a 'Helm of Comprenhending Languages' which I thought I was finally...See more

Another question from the Fantasy Grounds Conversion interloper. :)

As the character stands before the rope bridge (sheet 294), you are given the opportunity to make an investigation check to look for weaknesses on the bridge. About halfway across the bridge (sheet 056), the text asks if you made a successful Perception check previously to examine the bridge. There is an inconsistency. Should it have been perception check on sheet 294?

BTW, I have now bought and played through 4 of these 5e Solo Gamebook adventures, in their Fantasy Grounds versions. I have enjoyed them immensely! Good job!

Spoiler Alert!

I just bought this and have a few questions about one of the early battles. In the battle with Aurilana:

What attack does the Frostbringer staff do?

Does an additional minion appear at the start of each minion's turn, or 1 additional minion each round?

The text says Aurilana uses Thunderwave, but she doesn't have that spell.

I failed to mention in my post that I am actually using the Fantasy Grounds adaption of the module.

I spent some time poring over the description of Aurilana, and was able to tweak it so that Fantasy Grounds could properly parse the description and produce an accurate character sheet, as well as properly display it on the combat tracker. So, the questions about Frostbringer and the Thunderwave spell have been answered. That still leaves my confusion about the number of minions that can appear during a round.

I was not a fan of how Progress Points (didn't) work in this version. Given that, "Time is not so much of a factor here," the tiny number of rests (and strange placement - why not rest in the village, why press on?) was odd. My party (of two) added in short rests after a number of encounters, and still managed to nearly die a couple of times due to wandering into what they knew would be major encounters without enough resources. I encourage other players to add in rests where they make sense.

Enjoy your games! It does seem like the saviour codeword doesn't go anywhere... I did a word search of the PDF and it doesn't come up as a codeword for the rest of the story after it's dropped in the half-ogre fight.

Did this errata ever get published? I bought quite recently (this being nearly 3 years later) and ran into same problem. I was frustrated because I had changed my character's travel plans after rescuing the guy who gives this codeword. I also noticed in entry 89 the text "Or do you have another name you could mention? If so, there should have been a number that you noted down when you learnt that name. Go to that number now." I did not have a number to go with a name, so I was wondering if this could be related to the code word not going anywhere?

Would love to get an update if possible.

Heads up, Spoiler:

Not sure if stated already or if there was an errata sheet but entry 350 should direct to Combat Sheet: Wolves.

@5E Solo G

I have purchased your bundle for Fantasy Grounds and have played the first two in the series and very much enjoying them. I recently started using Foundry VTT, as I enjoy the dynamic lighting and the DnD Beyond integrations. I want to continue to play your solo adventures, but in doing so - I would have to purchase the PDF versions and begin porting them over to the Foundry system (simple and I do not mind doing so) - unfortunately, I am concerned that I may RUIN the gameplay experience because I would obviously become AWARE of the content, yet I may do it anyway.

Do you have any plans with providing a Foundry VTT version or other VTT versions other than just Fantasy Grounds?

If I take on the porting to Foundry VTT, I would like my work not to go to waste and be happy to provide it to you - so that you can offer it for sale to others. Let me know if you are interested.

Thank you so much for creating amazing solo adventures. It has helped me during...See more

@5E Solo G

I just received this message from Jeff Montgomery at DMSguild.

"Each publisher on our site creates and manages their own line of products. They make all decisions about their products including if they will be available for Fantasy Grounds or Foundry or some other system. I'm sorry but we don't have a way to predict what publishers are going to make available."

So if you are interested, I will be happy to port over your PDF solo adventures to make them available for Foundry users on DMSguild.
Let me know if you are interested. Thank you.

I really enjoyed this adventure. I played through DKS, TZK, CotR and now TTL. I'm really enjoying the content. Playing through an adventure itself doesn't take too long, but I suspect you really get your monies worth once you take a new character through the same adventures, there are lots of different paths and content to explore.

Normally I DM, so it's nice to get to play a PC

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
