Heisting Xanathar's Lair (maps, heist guidelines and DM's resources for Chapter 5: Spring Madness)

Heisting Xanathar's Lair

Dragon Heist. It's right there in the title. Heist. Not surprisingly, both you and your players likely expect that there'll be a heist – a daring theft from a dangerous location – in there somewhere. And while taking 500,000 gold dragons from the Vault of Dragons can technically be considered a heist, it's not exactly the sort of heist we've come to expect from watching films such as Ocean's 11 or The Italian Job. So what do you do, if you want to put the heist in Waterdeep: Dragon Heist?

Heisting Xanathar's Lair includes everything you'll need to succesfully run the dangerous Xanathar's Lair for your players. Delving into and adding to the information found in Chapter 5: Spring Madness, this download contains general guidelines for running a heist on a villain's lair, DM's resources that makes preparing for Xanathar's Lair fast and smooth, and several high quality battlemaps – all you'll need to put the heist in Dragon Heist!

This product includes:

  • General Heist Rules – ideas on which score to use and how to set up the need for a heist, as well as general guidelines to help you structure and run a heist on a villain's lair in Waterdeep: Dragon Heist.
  • DM's Resources for Xanathar's Lair – tables with valuable information about Xanathar's lair, new and alternative ways of entering the lair, easy-to-use lair encounters, and advice on handling distractions, raising the alarm, and, hopefully, your party's escape from Xanathar's Lair!
  • Xanathar Lair Roster – a one-page roster giving you a overview of the denizens of Xanathar's Lair
  • Tournament – A one-page guide to running an exciting tournament in the Pit of Blood and Fortune!
  • Monster Stat Blocks – a complete document with the monsters found in Xanathar's Lair, conveniently grouped so there's less shuffling pages at the table.
  • Maps – Four high quality battlemaps primed for use on digital tabletop, showing the Xanathar's Lair, the Xanathar Guild Hideout, the Night Dock Ward and the Pit of Blood and Fortune!

The Hideout map has room markings Q1, Q2 etc... Where are the descriptions for these rooms found?

Nevermind. It's in the Dragon Heist book. I'm an idiot. :)

Using these maps with FoundryVTT. How do i get them to scale properly? I cant get the overlay grid to scale on the large Xanathar Lair map without the grid quickly becoming misaligned and unusable.

Hi Charles

I have no experience with Foundry, but the Xanathar's Lair map is 80x100 at 75ppi (6000 x 7500 pixels total). Using these measurements, it should be possible to align it to the grid in any VTT. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful than that, but I simply don't have experience with the software :/.

Best regards,

The map previews on this product page are showing a tinypic "image no longer available" error instead

Are you going to make something like this for the Winter Wizardry chapter? I've used your products for Chapter 1-4 and it really helped me run the module. I'd love to see something for infiltrating Kolat Towers.

I'm liking the product quite a bit, but i'm having issues using the maps with Roll20; outside of the grid numbers (30x22), 80X100), what needs to be done to get the maps to line up properly? Scaling them up leaves empty rows that don't line up, and stretching to fit brings no joy. I could find no specs giving guidance; how do I make them work?

Do you have any plans to create a guide for "Chapter 6: Hell of a Summer"?

SUPER stoked for this! All the other W:DH supplements have saved my butt on every occasion with all the detail I missed on my own read-through. Thanks for all your hard work and look forward to running this soon!

Is this product going to be affected by WotC's recent policy change on maps (meaning, is this product about to be removed from dmsguild)?

I am not aware on a policy change, so I don't know. But I should hope not - last I checked, this product includes nothing in violation of WotC's content policy :)

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
