Arcane Gambler

Ever wanted a class that was focused maybe a little too much on luck (not the feat) ? Well, I did, and so I created this...thing. I was definitely more concerned with fitting a lot of actual gambling mechanics/games into this for thematic purposes. I know the balance is probably pretty off, but I had fun making it. I definitely would appreciate some input on making it more friendly to actual players/DMs to use.

Hey I love the potential of this class, I work at a company that produces gaming games so it's interesting to me to see all the features you've come up with! I just wanted to clarify some things:

One-Armed Bandit
- Is the spell on a 3 symbol win limited to the Arcane Gambler spell list? I assume they're cast using your spell save dc and attack bonus.
- I assume the debuffs apply to yourself as stated in Even the Odds, but how long do those effects last?

Also here are some feature analyses that you might find helpful - but its your class to do with.

Ante Up doesn't specify that you lose the Hit Dice you gamble regardless of winning or losing, it's certainly implied but it's worth being explicit about that to avoid confusion.

I'd like to look closer at the one armed bandit feature, and calculate the return to player. Odds of getting 3 numbers feels pretty good for the reward of a free spell cast, but it feels like it could use more balance as spell...See more

One last thing - in addition I've noticed there's a weird spell progression. You've gone for full caster, but with a reduced number of cantrips and slower spell slot gains. There's not really anything like it I've seen elsewhere.

I would recommend going for a half caster (Paladin or Ranger), a Warlock style pact magic, or even a quarter caster (the Artificer).

You won't get the 9th level spells, but many of the class mechanics focus on a combination of melee combat and magic rewards, and most gish / combat casters utilise half casting (paladins, eldritch knights, hexblades). That would bring it more in line with whats already around, but would require review a couple of your rewards.

Honestly at this point I'd actually like to try my hand at doing a revision of the class if you wouldn't mind? I can share all the documentation and files.

Hello! Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I thought I was set up for notifications on this but it appears not. I'm still rather new at actually posting anything on this site rather than just perusing and using. Thank you for the long comment! It's actually exactly what i was hoping for in the first place as this was the first thing I ever homebrewed (outside of random grenade creation mechanics for my girlfriend) and so I knew that my excitement to just create the thing was not tempered with enough consideration for balance.
I will address everything hopefully in order for simplicity.

One-Armed Bandit
I had intended the wins to pay-out for ANY spell available in the handbook and other sources, rather than just limit it to the spells I wanted available to the Gambler itself. My reasoning behind that was primarily because I had planned from the start to limit the spells available to the Gambler because I didn't want it too spell focused over feature focused. Not sure if that makes...See more

Glad to hear the feedback is useful to you! I have to say it's a great idea for a class, and some of the mechanics are really fun! You're definitely on to a winner imo, it's just playing with all the dials to fine tune everything.

Thanks for clarifying on a number of points, I definitely see where you're coming from on a lot of them, and the decisions you made make sense in context.

I did start on writing up a revision with a bunch of the changes I mentioned already, I'm just piecing together the slots mechanic in a way where you have access to different 'slot machines' as you level up, with different coin requirements and bigger risk / reward payouts, making it it's own sub-class. More than happy to share all once it's in a complete form.

Hey! Sorry I didn't respond to this for a while - I did some more work on it before getting distracted. Here is what I ended up putting together based on your work - hopefully it's of some help to you, I'd love to see you do more with the class.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
