Delve into the ruined library of a lost city in search of ancient texts. A quiet, atmospheric stroll through the halls of learning escalates into a race against fire, time, rival delvers, and the security systems of old that are still very much functional...

Introduction

History is written by the victor. But sometimes rewriting history yourself is the best way to get ahead. As feuds over feudal titles and trade privileges escalate, several people in positions of power are interested in firmly establishing their long-standing rights to whatever they have set their eye on. Unfortunately, contradictory historical accounts have landed everyone in a deadlock, and most sources older than that are buried in the now-ruined archives in the haunted capital of a fallen empire.

The superstition surrounding the place is enough to scare off even the most rapacious of noble glory hounds, but that is nothing a band of seasoned adventurers cannot handle.

FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES is an adventure for a party of 10th-level characters, intended for 4-8 hours of play. It is currently pending actual playtesting, so any feedback is more than welcome!

Features

  • 8 pages of adventure, designed for flexible pacing and engrossing exploration.
  • Location and encounter descriptions written specifically for theater of the mind.
  • 2 original monsters, the Bookcase Mimic and the Scroll Storm.
  • 2 maps by the talented Alex VanDerAa from Neutral Party, with a legend for all encounters in the adventure.
  • Custom charts designed for library delving: random books and chase complications.
  • Two versions of the adventure: the fully detailed version made on The Homebrewery, and a more accessible version with bigger fonts made in Word.

Thanks to:

Guillermo Garrido and my brother Martin, for providing feedback on writing and design, and Blind Temple for advice on describing locations for theater of the mind.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
