Martial Archetype: The Bodyguard

Suggested Price $1.00

Every good leader knows that having a fierce companion by your will increase the likelihood of their survival. Often this leader will search far and wide for a companion that is the best of the best in defending. At other times, bodyguards seek out others to protect, making it their own personal duty to make sure that the individual is safe. Either way, the bodyguard is the pinnacle of protection and uses their ability to ensure the safety of someone else, by putting themselves in harm’s way.

Quick look. After taking a quick look I get a theme of the bodyguard gaining all the advantages of this archetype. Why? Also its very complex to try and reference quickly in combat and there is a lot to remember.

1. "Defender" Why temps to the bodyguard? Giving temps is always tricky, because they don't stack. The highest amount always wins, meaning if they have a way to gain temps then yours becomes usually underrated compared to theirs. Second paragraph is all over the place. If this then that, but only if this but not that, all though it this under that circumstance. Doesn't sound concise or do I understand it. Maybe just me though. Last section. Why at any level would you gain more charges? A bodyguard on protects one "charge" or they wouldn't be able to really focus on what their doing. Maybe something to change their "charge" but more charges I don't feel makes the "Bodyguard" effective.

2. "Into Action". Ok not sure what we are...See more

A lot to break down here, so I'll do my best.

1. In defender.: I've always found temporary hit points to be useful, especially early on as this guy will be taking a lot more damage than others because they are throwing themselves in harm's way. Yes, Bards and other spellcasters can buff the bodyguard, but if this guy is protecting a noble on the road and its just him and that noble, this gives him a bit more grit.

Paragraph 2: The idea here is that should your charge be frightened or potentially take damage, you can use a reaction (which I forgot to note) to take that amount of damage or suffer the condition instead.

Paragraph 3: I envision the Bodyguard as moving all over the battlefield, back and forth, throwing themselves into harm's way for those they ware protecting. The idea of this, I actually got from D20 Modern, which has a similar feature, for thematic purposes, I picture this character jumping in front of the wizard to take a blow from one bugbear, then attacking...See more

1. In defender: So you see this character not "bodyguarding" one target but "bodyguarding" multiple targets? Ok I understand.
2. Into action: still seems complicated but I understand.
3. Draw Attention: So its still a concentration ability/spell. Either way? More to keep track of.
4. Reaction Defender: Still a little confused as to if a player would still want to grab that feat on top of this feature. And does the movement speed still stop on the target using its "opportunity attack" as a "reaction" to stop hit the target but the "sentinel feat" is an ally not just one of its "Charge"? SO really complicated but here is the gist. Does effects of using reaction of character with this archetype and sentinel feat work with both effects from the feat and the archetype.
5. Relentless Protetor: If your keeping the multiple "charges" that is super powerful in but would need playtest to confirm.

Guess I was just...See more

Very cool and potentially very powerful if used in the right circumstances.

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
