Second Glance

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $2.00

Woodlands patient, woodlands wise

Beneath the valley’s obscured skies

Dangers foul and treasures fair

Lie in wait for those who dare

But should the prudent take note here

Deduce, observe, or lend an ear

All is not as it says or seems

The civilized are cutthroat for shiny dreams

-  Haddiwe Vol, Witch of the Snakewood

Continue your duet campaign or add something new!

Wake up in a druid colony and embark on a quest for trust and truth with plenty of political intrigue, hidden plots, and exciting combat along the way!

Second Glance picks up where our first adventure, First Blush, left off and invites the PC to explore their world, test their growing abilities, and get to know their mysterious crystalline companion.

However, this adventure can be inserted into any campaign setting and scaled accordingly. Second Glance is part of D&D Duet’s mission to bring you high-quality, ready-to-play material that supports adventuring parties of 1 Player and 1 DM.

This adventure is written for a second-level character in a one-on-one 5th edition D&D campaign. It lets the PC explore a druid grove and observe its mysterious residents before traveling to a too-perfect town with twisted secrets. They’ll take on a calculating magistrate, addled cleric, and dark forest creatures but find that other, more ancient mysteries lie in wait just beneath the surface.

Everything you need for your own two-person game is inside!

This product includes:

  • A 2nd or 3rd-level adventure adaptable to any setting

  • Stat blocks for FOUR new creatures and three NPCs

  • A region map, two settlement maps, and two site maps to aid the PC’s investigations

  • A fully realized town complete with shops, fleshed out NPCs, and places to explore

  • Side-quests for curious adventurers or those fond of gold and magical items

  • Detailed backstory for the ancient warrior sheltered inside the PC’s treasured amulet

  • A custom magical item

  • And helpful tips for DMing a one-on-one game

This adventure is perfect for those looking to begin or continue their duet campaign. It could also serve as a story hook, session zero, or multiclassing narrative for a PC who wants to become a druid.

This storyline concludes with "Third Time's the Charm," available for download on DMsGuild!

Pick up the entire trilogy now conveniently bundled in The Crystalline Curse Trilogy!

Be on the lookout for more from D&D Duet!

If you haven't already, we’d love for you to check out the first adventure in this narrative arc, First Blush, and see where the story began.

We also created a light-hearted Sune’s Day adventure, Cupid’s Sparrow, for parties of any size who want to attend a festival and uncover the source of a few amusing mishaps.

The Second Glance PDF (the fancy, non-PF version) is missing the cover page with the art. I am printing these as a gift and would love to get the cover page so all 3 pieces of the trilogy look cohesive. I can see it as a thumbnail on this page but its too small to print.

I read all three parts of the crystalline curse trilogy and I feel like there is missing an explanation why the PC suddenly wants to do adventures instead of returning back home and attending the festival. Did I overread anything? (English is not my native tongue so I wouldn't be suprised)

That's a great question! We don't specify because it's really going to depend on the PC. Most of the backgrounds we wrote for the included character sheets involve the PC feeling stifled by their life and looking for something else, but they aren't sure what. Connection to Garren and wanting to help him could also be a motivation.

I'd base the answer around the PC's backstory and their class as much as possible, and the player can help you with this too! Maybe there's tension there—they've met people who need their help, and there seems to be something special about them, but at the same time, they have a life waiting for them at their place of origin. PC motivation makes for really dynamic duet sessions, so you are absolutely asking the right questions!

Please let me know if I can help with anything else!

My player chose to leverage the Ranger pre-generated character from First Blush. In it, she's the bastard child of a noble family, set to wed a cruel suitor in Waterdeep, so there isn't a ton of urgency there. That being said, I know that if I need to create an urgency for my PC, I can always come up with something, i.e. She receives a sending message from her friend Remy who's now on the run since he was present when she tried to teleport to Waterdeep, but was ultimately left behind.

That sounds great! I think leveraging the backstory is a wonderful plan and especially leaning on the friendship. In our home campaign, playing through the adventure that inspired this one, it was the friendship with Remy that took my PC back to her home. He had disappeared which launched us into what became the Land of Vampires campaign, and that might be my secondary leaning for the PC needing to adventure—something changes at home while they're gone, and so they either need to become more powerful to deal with it or they get swept up in events larger than themselves.

Hi Phil,
Thanks so much for reaching out to us about this! I went into the product and downloaded the file, and all the appendix pages are coming up for me. And then I got in touch with support, and they aren't able to replicate the error either. Do you think you could try re-downloading the file and see if it loads this time? And if not, there are a couple things we can try :)
Thank you!

Is there any explanation for how two lowly poachers managed to capture the Cervidae? It's stat block would suggest that it's a very powerful entity, unless these poachers are a really big deal (isn't the player meant to kick their butts when they meet Deni?) that doesn't add up to me.

What shakes the verisimilitude even more though is that the PC is meant to be of some importance to a wealthy noble family- wealthy enough to have a wizard on staff, and the PC themselves are meant to be making some important impression- shouldn't someone be looking for them by now after having been missing for days?

I really enjoy the set up to this adventure in First Blush, and I truly enjoy having a framework for me to work from so I can really dig into the experience of DMing as a novice, but my spidey senses are tingling when it comes to some plot elements. I might just be in a critical mood- I still intend to run this and hopefully swing back around for a proper review but I already see lots of parts...See more

Hi Yasha,
Thank you for your message. The first thing I would say is that the adventure is a framework, so absolutely feel free to adapt and change whatever is going to make the adventure the best fit for your table, your style as a DM, and your player/their PC.

The poachers weren't necessarily working on their own, but this is also a suspension of disbelief situation. At level 2, the PC and Garren can only handle so much in terms of enemy combatants, and the poachers' stat blocks align to the PC's abilities, not the cervidae's.

For your second question, the PC is a long way away from home in this adventure. Depending on the backstory you/your player selected for their character, I would absolutely allow the PC to assume that someone is looking for them. That may even be a great cause of concern for them in the adventure.

I think the biggest thing, though, especially for duet adventures, is to make them work for you. So long as you and the player are having fun,...See more

My daughter and I played First Blush yesterday and spent the entire day today on Second Glance. I'm amazed at how well it held her attention. There was quite a jump from one to the other in terms of complexity and challenge and we absolutely loved it!! It stretched my ability to DM and her ability to RP a fair amount, which was a great experience for both of us. I just purchased Third Times a Charm and can't wait to run it tomorrow. Thank you!

It says to see Appendix A for the map, but there's no Appendix A. Looking at previous comments, I see that I should be opening Second Glance.pdf, but neither of the files listed is that. I just get the printer friendly version and an updated version. Neither has a map. I don't mind making my own, but it's nice to have for my player. Other than that, this looks like a great starter, and I'm really looking forward to playing this with my player!

Appropriately, the Sacred Wood appears to be in non-Euclidean space. The map of the Sacred Wood indicates that the way to town is 'up' (top of page), while to the mountains is 'left'. The map of Duskhollow (the town) indicates that it is between the mountains and the Sacred Wood, which would ordinarily mean that the way to both mountains and town is the same from the Sacred Wood...

Meanwhile, "The druid colony is intimate and located centrally at the widest point in the Snakewood, half a day’s journey from both the road and Duskhollow for those who know where they’re headed. They’re situated only a couple hours’ travel from Strahmin’s Peak, where the rangers found the PC three days earlier." This seems to indicate that the rangers decided not to take the injured player to the town, but instead bypassed it and went a couple hours (or half a day?) into the forest to deliver them to the druids.

I'm not sure how Duskhollow (in the foothills of the mountains) is a half...See more

Halfway through it! I have a few comments though:
* The footer on each page says First Blush instead of Second Glance.
* This site description says level 2 or 3, but the pdf just says level 2. Should the PC level up twice if continuing First Blush, once before starting this to level 2, and again somewhere in the middle to level 3?
* Did the amulet of binding cast teleport, or did it augment the wizard's spell? How comes if the PC had it all their life it never did this before? (I know this is all probably intentionally ambiguous anyway, just curious what you had in mind. For my game, I'm saying the wizard did it on purpose to get rid of the PC and Remy because the family secretly hates one of them that much.)
* There are a lot of npcs for the dm to keep track of/roleplay! Thanks for generally keeping them separated from each other!
* You call for an Intelligence (Investigation or Nature) check to find the initial cervidae/wolf tracks? Normally Wisdom (Survival or Perception) are the...See more

Hey!
Just finished First Blush, and my GF loves the story so far!
We are about to start Second Glance, when I noticed that the guide says that some parties have added Remmy as a sidekick. When was the option to do that, or will he join later in Second Glance?
Is it necessary for the PC to have 2 companions or is it possible with only Garrens help?

Thanks, keep up the good work! :D

Hi Martin,
Thank you so much! That's wonderful to hear!!!

Some people have Remmy teleport along with the PC in the first half of First Blush, but you definitely don't have to have brought him along! The PC will be fine with just Garren's help. If you do find yourself in need of a rogue-ish ally for the party, there's a new NPC in Second Glance who can help with that.

Please let us know if you have any further questions! We're delighted that you and your GF are enjoying the adventure!

Just finished DMing this with my son (spoilers ahead). Overall we had a good time and the side quests were particularly entertaining because they could be played looser. I struggled a bit to keep up with all the NPC's and the important info that I had to deliver to the PC. He never discovered Louissa's plot, but he did find and rescue the Cervidae pretty early on. When it came time for the final confrontation between Louissa's mob and the Druids, I wasn't sure how to move the event forward. My partner's PC isn't very talkative or trusting, and I couldn't count on him to negotiate the peace between the two parties. I didn't want to have the resolution of the adventure come down to me talking to myself. Ultimately the PC and the sidekick Garren were able to intimidate Louissa and the angry mob away from the druid village. On her way back to town I had Louissa get attacked by a couple werewolves, which triggered a combat between the PC, sidekick, a couple druid werebears and the werewolves. At the end of...See more

Hi Beth, I'm prepping to run the trilogy as DM and I have some questions about Garren and the amulet: How far can he get from the amulet before he returns to frozen crystalline form? Does Garren recover HP while inside the amulet?
Reply

Beth B June 23, 2020 7:54 pm UTC
CREATOR
Hi Victor,
These are great questions! I see the distance from the amulet as a gradual problem, so if he were 300 yards/meters from it, he might start to freeze up or move a bit slower, and by the time he got a mile away, he would return to crystal. The distance should be long enough that he or the PC could chase after someone and not have to worry about Garren's immediately turning into a statue.

And I think the hp recovery depends on how long he's in the amulet, so if he uses it as a short rest and rolls hit die, that would be a great use of the amulet, but if he goes down to 0hp and is sucked inside the amulet, I'd have him come out at 1hp.

Those are just some general guidelines, and at the end of the day, it's really up to you as the DM. When I was first learning to play, I was really thankful for the amulet loophole so I didn't have to accidentally worry about killing my traveling companion while I learned to run my character and use a sidekick. Beyond that, for DMs, I suggest...See more

I'm new to being a DM (and to D&D). We (my son and I) did First Blush and LOVED it! I'm preparing for Second Glance and it says to level up the PC and Garren. I'm trying to figure out what Paladin level Garren is at the beginning of Second Glance BEFORE we start the adventure. OR has the stat sheet provided in Second Glance already leveled him up? It kind of looks like he's already been leveled up. I apologize if this is a stupid question and I'm just missing something obvious. Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Michael,
Will you make sure you're looking at the document called "Second Glance.pdf" and not "Second Glance_PF.pdf"? The printer friendly version doesn't have the maps in case someone printed them accidentally, but the regular version of the adventure does. If you'll look on page 18, you'll find Appendix A and the maps.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
