The Lair of Glaucous

The Lair of Glaucous

-because every first adventure should include a dragon-

Includes a Multiplayer version and a Dungeon Master + 1 Player version for characters of 1st - 5th level.

A village on the outskirts of the Glimmerwood hires a brave adventurer(s) to destroy the eggs of a green dragon who has taken root in the forest. Although this sounds like a bold and unwise move, the village elders have a second agenda: implicate a menacing band of orcs who also dwell in the forest.

Carrying fake orc feet, the adventurers encounter real orcs, navigate a leaning tower, and travel a secret tunnel that leads to the dragon's lair; all while being assisted by their bullywug guide named Glib.

Will the adventurers destroy the eggs, implicate the orcs, and cover their own tracks? Or will Momma come find them?

There are several ways to use this adventure:

  • Introduce a new player to the world of Dungeons & Dragons

  • DM an experienced player through a single character adventure

  • As a one-shot adventure while DMing a group of new or experienced players

This is the PDF version of the adventure. If you are looking for the Fantasy Ground module - click here.

Similar to EdO's question, I'm planning to run this for a 2-player party. Any advice for tuning the combat encounters? The multiplayer "very weak" encounters still seem to be overpowered -- too many combatants for 2 to handle.

You might try running it using the DM +1 version. Two characters against a bunch of minions would make for good fights. If it seems too easy, you can always add minions and / or increase the HP of the other creatures.

If I was going to run this a 1v1.5 (DM plus the character and a sidekick) what changes, if any, would you recommend making to the combat encounters?

I think you could run it as written. You may want to add a hit point or two to the threats, but I suggest doing that on the fly, adjusting as you see fit if the battles seems too weak.

Hey, one more question. Can you tell me what page to find the optional side quest of finding Glib's tribe and saving them from the fish people? For the life of me I do not see it in the PDF, though I see their stat blocks at the end.

That's Appendix 3: Village of the Dead

About how many hours does this adventure take? I'm looking for something that will be about 3-4 hours for my new players.

It’s designed to be ran as a 2, 3, or 4 hour adventure. You are given options to add to the initial 2-hour adventure.

Question for the author: Can this be played as a DM-less adventure?

It’s written for a DM and at least one player. Specific information is given to the DM thoughoit the adventure. That being said, I don’t really know the answer. It’s not wirtten like your typical solo adventure. It’s modeled after typical DM + player adventures.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
