The Haunting of Valentyne Manor

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Enter a cycle of endless terror...

Over seventy years ago Valentyne Manor bore witness to a horrible atrocity. A curse hangs over the site where a family was torn apart. Every hour their murders are played out by tormented spirits in a macabre exhibition. Can your heroes solve the manor's riddle or will they be doomed to join the ghostly procession?

The Haunting of Valentyne Manor is an adventure for characters of level 1-4, but can scale for higher level characters and can slot easily into any campaign, or be used as a standalone adventure.

This pdf includes full-color art, maps of the manor as well as a page of printable stand-up creature tokens of all monsters and NPCs appearing in this adventure for use on your own battle maps.

I was sent here for a free download only to find out it's not free. Not sure why it's posted as free, you might want to have them fix it. https://www.mtblackgames.com/blog/top-20-free-dnd-adventures

I am planning on running this during the upcoming week. If I aim for 5/6 players at level 3, would this work? Thanks. And thanks to everyone for sharing your home brew maps, most helpful!

Yes! My advice would be to have the first haunt be by-the-book and if it's too easy for the group then spring future haunts on them when they're in different locations and sprinkle in higher-level spirits of your choice as mini-bosses that represent more competent individuals who helped organize and lead the mob. Make it your own!

I've run it in four hours with five players before, but I don't like to get bogged down in combat, so have some home-brew rules to keep combat encounters to 15 minutes or less.

Hello I just got this for the story seemed like a fun spot in a homebrew campaign I'm working on. I was stuck for the final dungeon or temple so I went for a one shot deal. I found this and it fits the environment and story i'm writing really well. I can't wait to make this into the second to last dungeon in a three part campaign. (part 1 levels 1-7, part 2 levels 7-14, and part 3 levels 14-20) My players would be level 5 going into this and level 6 coming out. What would you say I should do to make this a bit more challenging for a level 5 party or should I let them have a bit of a brake? Only question I have. Other than that thank you so much for writing this and can't wait to run it.

I am planning to run this this weekend for my small group (only 2 players), what level would you recommend them starting at? Also, can anyone give me ideas on how to get the players into the house? I am a new DM and only ran one other game, so any ideas help. Thanks

Noob DM here: with a party of 4 level 2 characters, it looks like a wight and basically any specters is immediately a deadly encounter. Any thoughts on how to keep my players alive? Should I discourage combat?

When in doubt I try to remember that D&D always places rules secondary to fun and story, so feel free to make any adjustments that fit your group's playstyle. You may consider making the specters simply dissipate on one hit to highlight their ephemeral nature, or have the haunt end after a specific duration, regardless of the PC's interference. I always run this heavily skewed towards investigation, focusing on the atmosphere and ratcheting up the tension. In my experience the players rarely interfere with the goings-on more than once, and then only when they've got a plan, so don't feel like they have to scrub the whole place clean. Hope you enjoy it!

I made a battle map of the manor if anyone is interested https://imgur.com/gallery/skAVtK5

The dimensions aren't perfect for aligning to a grid, but it's kind of close.

On the third floor, there's a magic circle on the floor in silver. I'm just wondering what the relevance is to the module's backstory?

I like to leave open-ended bits for other DMs to explore and add their own spin, so feel free to interpret it in any manner you feel will add depth and flavor to the narrative. You might reference the second page under "History", first complete paragraph, and follow Valentyne's logic to whatever ends you imagine. Thanks for reading!

Hi! Just a random question. The bust that is on the landing (11 on the map), what is it for and what do the players get for finding the key?

Hi, Jose! Thanks for your support! Without spoiling too much for people reading these comments that haven't played it, it would be for housing the key to the room that the nanny is in. Knowing that not all D&D players have played a mystery-based adventure, there are several elements meant to arouse suspicion and get players to start investigating and searching to drive the narrative along, regardless of whether finding those items will be of any benefit. So, while not every little thing can be resolved in this adventure, and some are intentionally misleading, it's done in the hopes of sparking an investigative spirit. Hope that helps!

Hey, Jessica! Thanks for your support, it's much appreciated! Pages 8 and 9 are the maps of the interior and immediate grounds of the manor. I'm assuming that maybe you were expecting battle-maps, as in ones that could be printed and played on, but there a none in this adventure. I'm sorry if there was any confusion. Let me know if this doesn't answer your question!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
