DotMM Companion: Halaster's Game

The show must go on—and our players find themselves trapped in Halaster's insidious game.

In this chapter of the Dungeon of the Mad Mage Companion, we expand upon Undermountain itself and the dealings of the Mad Mage. Inside, you'll find:

  • Roleplaying Halaster Blackcloak. Further fleshing out of the Mad Mage, particularly as a deranged gameshow host. His goals have been revamped, his attachments laid out, and his abilities expanded.
  • Halaster's Game. Halaster's hit gameshow, Dungeon of the Mad Mage, which is—apparently—broadcasted across the multiverse, gets fleshed out. It includes theme song suggestions, 10 Weekly Dungeon Profiles detailing various characters of the dungeon, and 50 Transplanar Advertisements for you to use whenever you take a break at the tabletop.
  • Undermountain: An Overview. Tired of leafing through a book spanning 25 chapters? A summary has been included, detailing each chapter in a single sentence. Factions have been outlined. It also provides tips on starting at a higher level, which levels ought to be cut for the time-wary DM, and includes new features of Undermountain, such as Weave Addiction and other adventuring parties for the players to face.
  • Quick References. All magic items included in DotMM, as well as the NPCs & monsters inhabiting each level have been included in a quick reference guide. Most importantly, a single-page, color-coded map shows all 31 paired arcane Gates scattered across the dungeon.
  • Character Creation. The supplement also provides tips for character creation so your players enjoy all of what Undermountain has to offer. Also included are over a dozen quest hooks to answer the age-old question of "Why the hell are we in this cesspit?" These hooks help offset the lack of narrative that plagues DotMM's closed-off environment by attaching personal goals to the players, fueling their personal development.

This is the best stuff ever. I am running level 3 tonight and I have one player who keeps asking why he's even here. The Game Show host angle is perfect for my play-style and with my radio voice it's a hoot!

    Hey Ben!

Now that I finished Halaster's Game, I'll be bundling the chapters up in increments of 5 (and for a discount). Bundle 1 will consist of HG, Skullport, and Levels 1-3. Bundle 2 will consist of 4-8 and will be released once I finish the Slitherswamp chapter (hopefully next week!). All bundles will have a discount.

    Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
    Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
