Monster Manual Expanded is a 330-page source of content that supplements the Monster Manual.  It aims to provide Dungeon Masters more options and flexibility in designing adventures and dressing up their dungeons with a wider variety of creatures and characters that are based on the Monster Manual.  Finally, it also adds variants that provide a nostalgic and classic feel that DMs experienced with the older editions are probably familiar with.

In total, there are over 470 creature stat blocks in this book at the Dungeon Master's disposal!

Is it easy to modify monsters from the Monster Manual? Sure. But the number and variety already done up is well worth it. Not to mention that the product itself is top notch quality.

If you haven't yet, you should check out Monster Talents II. It includes 50 statblocks, some of which will end up in MME3.

I am very interested in purchasing the hardcover color versions of these books but I am curious before I make that investment if newly ordered print versions will have the corrections of formatting, layout, and typos that you have stated have already been corrected in the PDF version?

Hi Dathen.
Unfortunately, the hard cover copies will still have the minor typos in them. We are unable to update the hardcopies unless DM's Guild allows us to do so. The PDFs though will be updated very soon.

Is there a breakdown anywhere of what kind of CR range this book and MME II represent? For example, Volo's averages closer to CR 5 and is considered the better buy for low & mid-level encounters, while Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes averages CR 10 and is better for higher-level adventures.

I'm very much considering at least Book I, but am trying to decide whether it's better to XXX now or later in the campaign I'm currently running.

Thanks!

Hi Matthew. I can't give an average CR but I can give you this approximate breakdown instead:
MME 1 - 45% CR 5 and lower, 40% CR 6-10, 15% CR 11 and higher.
MME 2 - 40% CR 5 and lower, 40% CR 6-10, 20% CR 11 and higher

Hope that helps.

That's actually probably better than an average CR. Thanks for the quick reply! Book 1 just went on my to-buy-soon list!

Hi, I´m wondering what the service delivery is for this book. I live in Mexico and We´ve been having a lot of issues with Mexpost so I´d rather use a private service such as DHL, UPS, Fedex, etc.

Oh how wonderful!
One final question, are there angelic / celestial enemies in there?
Customer avatar
Dragonix M August 03, 2020 2:16 pm UTC

In the first book, yes. They're called Shaytan, which are the abyssal-corrupted versions of the angels.

Very nice tome, HOWEVER I wish that a more reliable/professional printer would've been used. It's disappointing to pay $70 for a hardcover book, wait almost a month for it to arrive and then see that ALL of the pages have been cut off at the bottom where the page numbers are supposed to be and leaving plenty of blank space at the top of the pages. Very disappointing and unprofessional. I doubt I will be purchasing MME II because of this.

I am very sorry to hear about your botched printing job, Keith. Please reach out to DM's Guild/OBS here and inform them of what happened: https://support.dmsguild.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. Send them an image of the error if you have to. They should be able to replace your copy and ship you with a new one. If that doesn't happen, let me know.

Also, botched is too strong a wrong word I shouldn't have used. DM's Guild has delivered hundreds of these books and this is the only time I've heard of the issue so it was probably a freak malfunction. There shouldn't be any reason DM's Guild/OBS shouldn't be able to send you a new copy.

Also if one bought this product and there is new version out (say that fixes typos, layout issues etc) how can one a) tell which version they've purchased and b) get the latest version?
Customer avatar
Dragonix M July 29, 2020 3:28 pm UTC
CREATOR
Hi Leif. When a new version is released, you will see a notification in your dms guild account that a pdf product u purchased has been updated. You can then just download the new version.

This tome is very very cool. It does exactly what the name implies it 'expands on the monster manual. If you don't have the (WOTC 5e D&D) monster manual don't buy this first. It has none of the 'base' critters' stat blocks in it. e.g. This book has 8 variants of goblins that could add a lot to your games but the basic goblin isn't in this book. None of the video reviews I watched mentioned this point specifically. art is great, very detailed, lots of NPC Stats in appendix b. 4.5/5 stars.

I ordered both and am pretty excited that I'll be getting them today from what I've seen these books look great the only thing I wasn't so into is that some creatures that are a higher cr then their original just have higher hp, ac and do a little more damage but ive only seen very few that are like that so it doesn't seem like too big a deal I'd love to make a good review after I've had time to play with them for a little

on (page 138) the iron juggernaut's lore blurb cuts of at "Thankfully, it is very rare as only the wealthiest and most powerful can".

The Skum Minion (page 13) is missing the damage of its attack (at least in the version of the file I got). Comparing with other CR 1/2 creatures with no Multiattack I gave it a 2d6+1, but I wonder if we can find out what was intended.

That's unfortunately a layout error. The text frame layer got cut during the prep for printing. The missing line showing underneath it reads "Hit: 6 (2d4 + 1) slashing damage plus 5 (2d4) psychic damage." It will included in the next pdf fix.
Thanks!

Sorry if this has already been asked, I didn't notice it in the comments.

but are there any plans or are there talks with Roll20 to get a compendium compatible version in their marketplace? I know there is a Fantasy grounds version.

Aaron.

Hi Aaron. There are no plans. It's not because I don't want to, but it's because I can't. Once you release a product through DM's Guild, you enter into an agreement that you can't sell it anywhere else. And since you can only purchase Roll20 products through their Marketplace, it makes it impossible.

Hello Dragonix! Just found a few typos and issues you can take note to correct in future versions!
Bulette and not BULLETE (p. 37)
Young Green dragon (p. 80) Is missing its deception skill proficiency and has the acid immunity, but it must be poison, as the other green dragon :)
Awsome work, i love working with it. I am making a bestiary of my own, and you are my inspiration!

Hi Sophie,

Good luck on your bestiary! I'm honored and looking forward to it! :)

I am glad these issues have already been noted :) I know now how much work it is to create a bestiary without any issues! If i find anything else, i'll keep you in touch!

Have a lovely day :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
