Grod's Guide to Greatness

Grod's Guide to Greatness is a major repository of character options for 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons, aiming to fill every empty niche not yet covered by Wizards of the Coast.  From the magically engineered perfection of the Magewright to character-defining Legendary Feats, Grod's Guide will provide everything you need to make your character truly great, including:

  • Five new base classes: the Alchemist, a full caster who works with potions and bombs; the Magewright, who equips their entire party with magic items; the Steelsworn, a warrior in the vein of the Ranger or Paladin who wraps themselves in protective magics; the Summoner, who binds and commands a single powerful spirit; and the Wildling, a shape-shifting warrior.
  • Thirty-three new subclasses, ranging from the bare-handed rage of the Path of the Fist to the eclectic knowledge of the Tradition of the Arcane Savant, every one of the twelve existing classes gets at least one new subclass.
  • Thirty-one new feats, including ways to focus on a single type of weapon or style of magic, Racial Feats for the races in Volo's Guide to Monsters and the Elemental Evil Player's Companion, and Legendary Feats that can only be taken after raising one of your ability scores to 20.
  • Nineteen new monsters, from low-ranking Celestials like Lantern Archons to the mightiest Elder Elementals.

As of  June 2nd, 2021, Grod's Guide has been updated to a second edition!  Two new classes, four new subclasses, and numerous fixes for balance and presentation.

Good book! Specially liked the Banefire Knight and the Spellwarp Sniper. Also, I liked your take on the Artificer (called Magewright in the book). As of right now though, "Alchmist" subclass name is missing an E.

Have you played test the Magewright? It seems pretty good just shoving out all those mage items.

I've done some; it's not that bad. Remember that you're limited to [Int Mod] items at once (or a few more minor ones), and that Attunement slots still apply. The effect also tends to be distributed over the whole party.

There's tons of good stuff in here, especially for the price, but I want to give a special call-out to the Banefire Fighter. This is a really good way to give a splash of magic to a Fighter that works very well for flavor while *interacting* with a fighter's strengths. That's all too rare in attempts to Gish up a fighter, and I really appreciate it-- the balance is good; the flavor is good.

Thanks! I'm glad you got a kick out of it, and the book in general. Tell your friends!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
