To Each, Our Own Battles

An Adventure for 11th-16th level characters, optimized for APL 12

Only you can kill your demons.

An adventure that centers around helping an NPC flee from a curse spawned from one of the most fabled magical items in the game of Dungeons & Dragons. This adventure mixes tough combat encounters with light exploration. The combat requires players to re-think how they approach an enemy, and emphasizes using tools other than just attacking the target to reach your goals. After all, even some problems cannot be solved with simply being a higher-lever character. Includes all the NPC/monster stat blocks required to run the adventure, and two full color maps.

I read through it and it looks epic, I do have a question though.

Spoilers

For the first encounter with the avatar in the inn, can the characters grapple or restrain the avatar without creating their own? Otherwise it seems the only course of action is to take the victim somewhere else or to then and there discover how to kill it. I dont see a scenerio where they get to stay and rest in the inn as you described. The avatar would just be there unless they hide somewhere else. Did you have another outcome for the inn fight in mind?

Thanks for giving it a read! Let me know if you ever end up running it - and please leave a rating/review!

In response to your question:

As long as the characters don't deal any damage to the avatar, then they won't spawn their own avatar. Characters can (and indeed, are encouraged) to grapple or restrain the avatar. They can also cast spells that can hinder the avatar's movement, or cast de-buff spells.

The inn encounter is written in such a way as to deny the characters the ability to fully rest at the inn and to encourage them to hide Jeshma elsewhere (preferably, the Zhentarim Safehouse, but they can keep hiding her elsewhere, the Avatar will continue to pursue). In this way, they are now somewhat tied to Jeshma's fate (they cannot rest until she can rest). Jeshma is also not in the correct mental state to take on the Avatar, (it would take a very good persuasion check to convince her to attack the Avatar at this point in the adventure). She is more likely going to flee...See more

Thanks for the comments, I hope you enjoyed the adventure! If you have the time, please consider sharing and/or leaving a review/rating.

I have submitted this adventure to be considered as part of the charity bundle DMs Guild is putting together for RAINN (keep an eye out for it this week, I'm sure it will be full of great stuff). If the adventure isn't submitted, I will change it to PWYW.

Thanks again!

Hey Ethan,
I found this and god damn does it look awesome. My party mentioned they wanted a short gothic one shot, this is PERFECT.
How long do you think this might take to get through?

Hi Cameron,

Thanks for checking out the adventure! The adventure is meant to be played as a one-shot, so I would estimate it to take 3-4 hours, depending on how quickly your Adventurers catch on to what's going on. Let me know how it goes!

Have fun!

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
