Gothic Trinket Documents: Ephemera for Curse of Strahd

Gothic Trinket Documents is the latest in a series of Curse of Strahd ephemera documents I'm producing intended to help immerse your players in the gothic world of Ravenloft. Included you will find the printable PDF for the following handouts:

  • 01-02 A picture you drew as a child of your imaginary friend (6 variations on spooky and one Ireena)
  • 13-14 The unopened letter to you from your dying father (3 variations in different contexts/relationships)
  • 77-78 Small, worn book of children’s nursery rhymes. (Rime of the Ancient and the Land, a setting-appropriate nursery rhyme written by Ashton Duncan and illustrated with Victorian-era engravings of Shakespeare's work, particularly Macbeth and The Tempest, with thanks to Michael John Goodman for digitizing them

These documents were created in Adobe InDesign.

Within the PDF I have provided the text and image description of each document to help with accessible use of this product. Additionally, I've linked to a Google Drive containing a  PDF of the children's book Rime of the Ancient and the Land intended for double-sided printing and collation into a pamphlet-style book.

Below is the text of the children’s book, for a sneak peak:
This is the Devil Strahd's domain,
He is the Land, long may he reign.
If you hope to be His bane
I wish you luck, I feel your pain.

Up in his castle he does stay,
unwanted guests he does make pay.
If from the path you hope to stray,
I wish you luck, I miss the day.

Up on the way a carriage waits,
the Devil plans to fill your plates.
If you pass through Ravenloft’s gates,
You will surely meet your fates.

Barovia, the land of mist,
The devil’s bride waits for her kiss,
a devil’s cult within their midst,
Our dread lord, the man of myth.

I love this kind of paper ephemera. It add so much to a game and I think Ashton Duncan has done a fantastic job. I'm looking forward to some Waterdeep props! [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
