Martial Exploits

Suggested Price $9.99

Version 2.0

• This is a conversion of almost 900 4th Edition Martial Powers into 5th Edition abilities.

• The powers were converted from the 4th Edition Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, and Warlord.

• These are designed as alternate rewards to magic items and treasure. They are similar to Boons.

• They can also be used to add flavor and combat options to Monsters and NPCs.

• Each Rank is about equal in power to a spell of the same level.

• These are not intended only for martial classes, but as rewards for any character looking to add more martial flavor to their combat options.

It is part of a larger work in progress, converting Arcane Incantations, Divine Prayers, Primal Rites, and Psionic Disciplines. As I finish the others, I'll link to each of them.

Hiya. Great work, really impressive. How do you decide which powers are short and which are long rest? Is it tied to encounter/ daily in the source material of did you eyeball them?

I kept the recharge times the same as they were in 4e. Generally speaking the main difference is, short rest abilities may provide a larger buff or debuff, but they normally only last one turn and can possibly have no effect on a successful save. Whereas long rest abilities will have weaker buffs/debuffs. But last for 1 minute or more and always do something even if the target succeeds on their save.<br>
There are abilities that fall outside those parameters, but those are edge cases. Arcane Incantations and Divine Prayers are designed the same way.

Gotcha (and thanks for the quick reply). What go me thinking about it was that I was looking at

Deadly Knowledge
Rank 1 Exploit • Utility (Short)
When you attack a bloodied enemy, or score a critical hit against an enemy, your attack deals an extra 1d10 damage.
You twist your weapon or adjust your aim, hurting your foe a little more than usual.

And I compared it with

Bell Ringer
Rank 1 Exploit • Offensive, Weapon (Short)
When you hit a creature with a melee attack using a weapon, your attack deals an extra 1d10 damage, and the target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or be dazed until the end of your next turn.
If you made the triggering attack using an axe, hammer, or mace, the attack deals an extra 2d10 damage instead of 1d10.
You smash your weapon into your enemy, jarring their vitals.

One seems very much better than the other. Although Deadly Knowledge only requies and attack rather than 'when you...See more

So, Bell Ringer is an "Offensive" exploit, which means it's limited to one of those per turn (or round if you want to be stricker), while Deadly Knowledge does not have that keyword/tag. This means Deadly Knowledge can be stacked on top of another exploit, which is why it doesn't less overall.

I also specifically left some of them weaker than others in the same Rank just so that if a GM felt one was too powerful, they might allow the weaker version.

That makes perfect sense thanks for clearing that up. Good stuff.

Any chance you could adapt this to FG (Fantasy Grounds)?
Customer avatar
Damian S December 31, 2019 4:51 pm UTC
Sorry, it's not likely since I don't have Fantasy Grounds.

I know that some people are willing to Convert stuff over to FG if asked. Someone by the name Rob does conversions.

Maybe I can look into it at a later date. Right now I'm proofreading Martial Exploits v2.0, which I'm hoping to post on Friday. Mostly a numbers and wording update to bring it in line with feedback I've gotten over the last year. I also was able to convert most of the powers I skipped the first time due to not knowing how I'd convert them. So there are now just over 900 exploits.

Thank you for all your hard work and progress! As someone who wants to get into DMing, I've been scouring the website for material to use.

I highly recommend for articles and advice on running TTRPGs in general, but also has some great stuff for 5e.

Hello! Still a big fan of your work and would like to follow it, but your ko-fi link doesn't work, what can I do to follow your progress?
Customer avatar
Damian S October 15, 2019 4:24 pm UTC
It doesn't appear to let me link outside the site, so I just added the URL for Ko-fi, which is the best way to follow me until this site allows for such things. Divine Prayers is being proofread now and should be going up next Tuesday.

Hello! I’m a big fan of your work and am hoping Arcane Incantations come out soon. I’m right to assume it will be the next one to be released?

Thanks! Yes, I'm finishing the Bard this weekend I hope. Then I just need to convert the Artificer and Sorcerer. I'll be posting an update on this supplement to announce it, then have a link to it in the description.

It says this is part of a large collection available on DM guild but i cannot find any of the other books?
Customer avatar
Damian S February 23, 2019 11:53 pm UTC
The others are in the works. I'm about halfway done with Arcane Incantations. Which will be the same as this, but with Arcane themed options. I apologize for any confusion. I've updated the description.

Both version are not appearing correctly for me: All the non-header text appears as symbols not letters and is completely unreadable. I have seen this before with fan-made content that uses homebrewery or gm binder (not sure which). Not sure what the issue is, but I would love try these out, but right now the PDF is completely useless for me.

I just downloaded them to check, and they look fine for me. My guess is that there was just a connection error when you downloaded them. Maybe try again in a bit to see if the site is more stable. If you still can't, send me an e-mail at
I am sorry that it's not working right for you.

I will give it a shot later, but it seemed to download fine. And as i said, I have seen this issue before with homebrewery/ gm binder. Sometimes there is an issue and sometimes there is not. I'm guessing it has to do with embedding fonts or something. That is why it looks fine to you, but not to me.
PS - thank you for the quick reply.

I understand, but like I said, if it still won't work right for you, we can try and figure it out together.

Version 1.1 is uploaded, but only the Ink Friendly version. The main version keeps timing out. I'm assuming it has to do with the site running slow right now.
The normal version will be uploaded as soon as I can.

Update Notes:
Version 1.1
- Fixed various typos and flavor text
- Added a *Fear* tag
- Fixed wording on **Hearten the Beast**
- Renamed **Hunter's Bear Trap** to **Hunter’s Trapping Shot** (Better reflects description)
- Added **Terrain Dominance** (It slipped by)
- Removed **Hunter's Agility** (It's actually a Primal Rite)
- Cleaned up the Table of Contents
- Added a rule for "Attacking Objects"
- Added explanation for "Expending Hit Dice" to the Terms
- Various small formatting changes based on feedback

Both versions are now uploaded. The original "normal" version was over 300mb. I compressed it down to 11mb.

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
